Will a 17 inch rim fit a 08/09 SS ?
think about it, if the 16inch SPARE STEELIE fits the rear then it's fair to bet that there could be one specific rim 16inch that would fit over the brembos...........can't hurt to try and find one that fits if it saves on winter tires.
The brake calipers are different on the front and back! Brembos only on the front!
A 17" rim (if it fits) will probably BARELY clear the front brakes.
Who are you again? the rim expert or something? Can u name every rim every size down to the last inch or mm?? I think not, I think instead of trying to me Mr "i know it all" u should sit on your hands and wait to see if someone finds a SPECIFIC 16inch rim SOMEWHERE that MAYBE, could fit. For all you know a custom rim could made to fit and if 50+ ppl got into a GB they COULD be cheeper than getting 17 or 18inch winter tires/rims. Cmon dood try and think positive, u could be saving a few $100 that could goto power mods if someone found a 16inch that worked........ANOTHER option........who needs brembos in the winter??? Potential is ALWAYS there for using a smaller caliper in winter from say a salvaged ss/sc........total shot in the dark but hell it could be worth a few $100 ever 2-3 seasons on buying smaller winter tires.........it all depends on the person and what they wish to do right?
That isn't really the point of the discussion. The fact of the matter is that the Brembo caliper is HUGE and it will really limit the wheel choices...
Absolutely not. 17 would be the smallest and that's going to depend on the offset. 16" in ANY offset is COMPLETELY out of the question and should not even be attempted.

are you suggesting a temporary winter brake package? cause that sounds dumb IMO
THANKS
I found a achilles heel on her.
I am really looking to get her in the winter. 09 ss/tc silver only & LSD
If I can't find 1 I order 1 when a good sale comes along. I am 1 of those people who will keep there car stock, now I need spare rims w/ snows too.
If they didn't put Z rated performance tires on it, they would have had to limit the top speed for the tires. Many people don't realize it, but that is often the thing that limits top speed on a car.
Plus, who wants to mess up their pretty forged wheels?
U live in America.........a Canadian winter just don't compare watsoever to winter in Philly........alot of ppl up here end up investing in a winter beater but to me that's just another car to maintain and end up having to spend money on, defeating the purpose of buying a brand new car with warrenty. I'm sure most ppl up here will end up just getting 18inch winter tires, i personally however will be looking at anyway possible to save money on winter tires......18inch winters are expensive for the good ones.
why are all the noobs rejecting the sound advice of senior members (alleycat and USMCfieldMP)???? they know what they are talking about.
and to end this, because it's come up about 3 times now
THE SPARE IS NOT INTENDED FOR THE FRONT WHEELS!!!!!

Looked real hard at the Front Brembos on an SS/TC today... I think (if you've got the heart to do it) you could grind down the corners of the Calipers and make a 16 fit. MAYBE.
The Corners are certainly the spot that is restricting sizing choices.
That's the stupidest thing I've ever heard. Its your car though. If you wanna waste time changing out your Rotors, Calipers, & Pads twice a year... not to mention bleeding brakes as well.
I bought a 92 Topaz as my winter beater this last year.
It cost me $250. I drove the **** out of it and didn't worry about whether it lasted or not. End of winter came and I scraped it for $400. Driving that around in the winter was a BLAST... I had tons of fun. Especially in comparison to the year before where I was scared shitless in my SS... trying my hardest not to loss control on ice patches etc. ****, in the Topaz I PURPOSELY lost control and drifted every corner.
No one says you have to buy a $5000 winter beater. There are plenty of Shitty Trucks and cars for sale these days for less than $1000.

What is your conclusion on the 17s??? I just want someone else who doesn't think I'm crazy.
I don't remember the exact clearances, but I know when I measured it looked like a 17" would fit with no clearance issues, so long as it was within the proper offset range.
I think they will fit as well... but I don't think that ALL 17's would fit. It's gonna be a tight squeeze. It's like you said... the offset has to be right.
I've seen some brakes crammed into some rims before though. From Mid-Ohio (its a Porsche):

16s fit if it's the right offset and not ALL 16s fit - 15s require caliper grindage.
If I were cool enough with a Chevy dealer I'd experiment with other OEM wheels, that tends to get the closest to stock offset. See what other OEM 17s would fit. The one I measured at was on a Sunday and they were closed
Haha, I got hassled like crazy yesterday. I think as soon as they saw the SS/SC pull up behind the TC and me get out - thoughts of Instant Sales danced in their heads.
