2009 Cobalt SS - Block Heater?

Hey guys,

So I have heard both sides of the story. "Yes Cobalt SS's have block heaters." "No they dont." "It was an option" "All Canadian SS models came with block heaters from factory" etc

Anyhow I would really appreciate it if someone could clarify this for me. Does my car have a block heater? I bought it in Edmonton, Alberta, Canada . Its flipping cold out here and I would really love to plug my car in. I have a heated garage but when I am at work for 12 hours and its -40 with windchill, it isnt good.

So was this an option on Cobalts, should I have a block heater? If so, where should I be looking and does anyone have a picture of it?

Thanks

Well there isn't alot about it in Dealerworld but i did find an RPO code
K05 Heater Engine - Block

And in the LNF exhaust manifold removal instructions it lists as steps 6 and 7

# Remove the block heater bolt, if equipped.
# Remove the block heater, if equipped.

I have heard that CAN cars all/most had block heaters. Not sure on the cobalt, but if you dont find a power cord in the bumper you can do what I did for my escape. Oil pan heater, not drilling or punching a hole so no leak issues.

I had the EXACT same problem, I kept getting conflicting answers about different options on this car (standard LSD, leather/heated seats options, bluetooth, etc). The short answer is no, there is no option for a block heater for the >08 SS. However, I found a thread (see below) where someone modified GM PART # 12499853 to make it fit on the 08 or newer models, my dealer even modified and installed it for me (ironically, they shaved the corner down too far the first time breaking the heating coil and ordered another 1 in to modify). The job doesn't look THAT hard to do, the worst part is getting into the spot (its pretty tight if you don't have a car lift)

I haven't had a chance to test the heater in the cold as i'm STILL waiting for my winter tires to get here (bloody discount tire) but I had plugged it in for a few mins in the garage to test it and it burned the tip of my finger pretty good.

Glad to hear this. I will be contacting my dealer on Monday to see if they can install one for me. If not... well I guess its do it myself or buy a car starter/alarm combo and have it timed to turn on every 2 hours or once my car drops below a certain temp.

im in canada and mine didnt come with a block heater, me and the dealer looked when i was ordering and it wasnt even an option on the ss. Apperently they didnt need one because they use synthetic oil so i was told. I just got a oil pan heating pad from canadian tire, works just as good.

Mine never came with one searched hi and low. took it in to get one installed they ordered it. get a call 3 hours later saying theres no place to mount it and the car never had the intention of needing one. i called a bunch of places within the company all POd and they all said the same thing. Synthetic is mandatory on these cars and with synthetic you do NOT NEED a block heater for temps above -35c the only thing you may want to get is a heated batery blanket to put in the trunk. It hits tems here -35 ish and i have never had a problem not so much as a studder. my old 2.2 would always start as well but you could tell it was absolutely pissed to do it if not plugged in. the lnf just starts up and pretty smoothly as well. not perfect but no real difficulty. no place to install a block heater long story short. there may be aftermarket applications now and maybe brackets on 09+ for bock heaters they may even come installed now. but for sure the 2008 model year lnf do not come with nor have a place to mount a block heater on them. you can use an oil pan heating pad if you think its having trouble personally i can audibly hear its having no disfunction.

I have one of these in stock for the Cobalt but I haven't had anyone tell me if it will fit all the Ecotecs.

If someone wants to test drive it I will gladly accept it back if it won't fit.

Order it on line and put "Test" in the comments field.

The picture for this kit is incorrect it simply bolts to the side of the block, it does not go directly into the water jacket.

i still think they should have one, last year one time in -20 when i started my car it almost shook itself apart it vibrated so much in the cold, until it warmed up. plus i dont care what oil u use, -35 is still hard on a motor at startup

i definately wont argue with that only passing on what they said lol. basically they said shove it. im sure when they say synthetic is good no block heater needed there definatly not considering the praries where it gets way to damn cold for anything.

at the time there just wasnt much you could do. ( i guess the oil pan heater would work never thought of it)

The onyl reason I am looking for a block heater is cause last night and the night we hit -46 without wind chill and -52 with windchill. -46 will freaking kill a car haha. And I am not even in northern canada... I am in EDMONTON!

Yup, that's what Edmonton's good for... setting record lows (hockey and otherwise)
