BCM vs ECM vs independant systems (2009 SS)
HELP!
I didn't know exactly where to post this, but seeing as how I've read of changes even to the BCM between 2008 & 2009 Cobalt SS's I figured this was as good of a sub-forum as any.
I have a 2nd 2009 Cobalt SS.
Right now it isn't driving - it's a wreck (literally), but it isn't driving right now mostly because the ECM was sold prior to my buying it.
(you may pause to laugh)
I've spend the odd evening cleaning it up, and I got to a point where I am finally able to try getting power to the car, so this evening I hooked up a new battery to get the windows/locks to work - but nothing happened.
Well the dash lit up, the message center flashed, and upon turning the car "off" again, the mileage was displayed... but other than that nothing happened.
Can anyone tell me if in fact the windows or (what ever) are for some retarded reason powered through the ECM?
I'd like to be able to roll down the windows while the car is in my garage, then roll them up when I want to move the car outside.
I am also wondering what I will have to do to get the car running again once I source an ECM - right now I have a flashing "service airbags" in the message center.
I know on my 1991 GM, I can have the ECM unplugged and every other system will still work... kinda wishing this car was like that about now...
Am I going to need a Tech II?
(I passed on buying one a little over a year ago, and am kicking myself for it of late)
Thank you very much to anyone who can offer assistance.

The BCM is what controls the power windows on the Cobalts. The ECM has nothing do do with it. However if you have the ECM unplugged you're cutting the high speed LAN line off. That may have an affect on the BCM's operation.

thank you for the reply!
so when i get another ECM, and have someone with HPT do the whole crank relearn or whatever - can they also disable the airbag crap ~ or can any decent code scanner (ect) do that?
(I'm in the process of getting an OBD2 cable for my actron 9145 btw)

I doubt that installing an ECM will affect the airbag system unless the communication issue I mentioned is what's causing the problem.
Were the airbags deployed when your donor car was wrecked? That'd also have something to do with it.
Most generic scanners can't read/clear SIR (airbag) codes as far as I know... but I could be wrong. Though if you fix the problem that is setting the code, the light will turn off immedeatly.

the airbag module probably still needs to be replaced, or reset, normal code readers can't do this, neither can hptuners
also the pretensioners in the seat belts probably went off, those are run from the airbag module too, so those also would need replacement, also i am guessing one of the airbag sensors is activated on the front of the car, if not more, those would need replacment as well

hmm you're conveying an understanding of sub-components I didn't even know existed...
I'm not interested in any replacing at this time - if I fix this car, I will be buying another car to use as a donor, from which I suspect any sub-components will be used from...
well you've given me something to start off with...
thanks!

no problem, im not 100% sure how it all works, but to my understanding
2 or more airbag sensors must be activated for airbag deployment, in a addition to those sensors the airbag module also takes into consideration, speed g's and other details of the vehicle
the pretensioner s are ussually explosive charges that pull the seatbelt in to pull you tight to your seat, these are in addition to the seat belt lockers that just lock the seat belt at any position

I bumped into a buddy tonight, and he told me that he can't borrow the techII from his work ever - and he's a fully licensed tech!?
The reason I say you need to install a new ECM first... is that the airbag module is on the high speed data line. If the ECM is missing the data line is incomplete.
The airbag module may be setting a code for loss of communication with the ECM. So start with the new ECM and see if the light remains. If none of the airbags deployed, its likely that the seat belt pretensioners didn't deploy either.
