Burning Oil Issue---Ideas?
Burning Oil Issue---Ideas?
Some of you may have seen my post the other day about my issue. Still wanting some more feedback, hoping maybe others have had similar issues.
My old stock turbo blew, I replaced it with a seemingly perfect stocker with absolutely no shaft play.
I cleaned all the piping, intercooler, & everything getting old residue out. So the smoke isn't old stuff.
The car only smokes at idle or if you throw it in neutral after driving on reacceleration it will start smoking. The car doesn't smoke under boost, or normal driving conditions at all.
Myself & a very skilled mechanic looked at the car last night trying to figure out the issue. We were fairly crunched on time but ruled it down to 2 things it would have to be.
1. The exhaust side of the turbo seal is blown.
or 2. The breather line from the valve cover to the turbo isn't functioning correctly.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

Is there oil in the pipes again? Check that and rule it out , then I'd agree with exaust side of turbo . Or rings. To bad it's not a front engine turbo setup on these engines, easy to take off and check.
Took & cleaned out the whole piping setup & intercooler, cleaned everything in & out.
So it was all clean at a point, & still smoked, so oil has found its way back in.
From one of the 2 problems I assume.
Mechanic said rings should be good. Cant 100% rule it out, but everything runs fine if it was a ring it should smoke all the time, under normal conditions, or my vacuum should have changed. None of that has. Not saying it couldn't still be a problem, but yeah.
Ok first you say it smokes. Is it visible or your just smell it? Second if there is oil in the pipes that will not cause it to smoke. Second did you put the stock oil restrictor back on? If your turbo is fetting too much oil it will seep thru the seals and burn off
It's very visible.
Turbo was replaced 200 miles ago.
The car is pretty much completely stock, wouldn't think bid need a restricter on a stock turbo.
From the previous owner the car is straight piped, so thats why I don't think it's old residue.
After cleaning all pipes, couplers, & the intercooler I let the car idle for a bit & pulled one back off, there was a bit of oil you could feel.

Even with a straight pipe; oil cakes inside the pipe.
Do you have hptuners? can you pull a log of your idle? Also you say its straight piped does that mean you have a catless down pipe? Also how visible are we talking can't see through the cloud of smoke or just a light smoke that a camera can barely capture?
Catless downpipe. Very visible. Especially after sitting at a stoplight or stop sign or something. When I take off it clears the exhaust of course, pretty much shoots a pretty good cloud, but then is fine because it doesn't smoke while I'm driving or anything.
So its visible but your not consuming a noticable amount of oil, I would drive around a bit more and see if that changes. If your seals on the turbo where going out I would expect it to smoke all the time not just idle.
I check regularly & I don't seem to be losing any. I know that small amounts of oil can create a bunch of smoke, but yeah.
Like I said, cleaned all the piping & everything so that would all be free of oil.
Then let it idle & drove it down the street & back.
I then pulled both intercooler piping sides off & on the passenger side inlet of the turbo there was some oil on the inlet. Also some oil in the drivers side piping.
Check for black spots(oil) on the rear of the car. May be hard to see if your car is a dark color. This will at least help narrow down if the engine is consuming oil or if the source of oil is in exhaust, ie. turbine seal or old oil residue.
It is also worth noting that if you are using Mobil 1 or any other high quality synthetic, that it does not break down as easily as conventional oil and may take longer to burn off than you would think.

I have a thought, have u checked if ur crank vent hose is plugged? If it is it will build pressure in ur crank case and basically push oil through any seal it can. That happened on my talon.
No not on the one from the valve cover to turbo. The other one that draws in fresh air. I'd think if it was not working it would cause high pressure and pull oil through turbo seal. That ones goes down to the crank case. The other one goes into valve cover only
