CEL with K&N Intake

I have been getting a CEL with this intake and I was wondering if anyody else was having this problem. Its been happening for awhile as I could'nt bring myself to blame it on the intake until now. Friday driving to work just cruising my car went into limp mode and would not go above 5psi. This has happened only since I've put the intake on and i would just turn the car off and back on and it would be fine for the next day or so. So when this happen i did the same thing and maybe five minutes later car dropped boost and CEL came on. I went to Autozone to have it scanned and out of disbelief it was p0101 maf sensor performance code. I then went home pulled the negative battery cable and cleaned the maf sensor with some electrical cleaner. Let it sit for about 20mins put everything back together and went for a cruise and it dopped boost again. After that i put the stock air box back on and my car is back to normal. Drove the p*** out of her all weekend and no problems. I made d*** sure all my clamps were tight and and everything was installed correctly. Even read the instructions about ten times to make sure a didnt miss anything. I tried rotating the filter with no luck. I searched multiple threads on this intake and nobody seems to be having any problems with it. Is mine just a factory freak? Thanks for any help!

Was the air filter oiled? Maybe they didn't oil it? That's the only thing i can think of.

My car is just as touchy I put a K&N air filter in and had the same issues you did I cleaned the MAF and still had issues I put the stock filter back in and no more problems so I just left it like that. You may need a tune I have read the intakes throw off the fuel trim tables that's why the car acts stupid

I guess a**holes come along with any question, but thanks for your input. I'm aware of certain opinions on needing to be tuned for an intake.

I would pull the maf and clean it, look at the filter and see if its over oiled. Also did you have the cel read to see WHAT error it was? because if its just a maf error then the comments of being tuned are null. If its over oiled it would cause that. I usually let my oil filters sit a few days and blow them with air from the inside to get some oil off.

Also the k&n filter needs to be installed with a certain rotation as you can see its oblong shaped and not perfect circular.

You did say this..right?

I searched multiple threads on this intake and nobody seems to be having any problems with it. Is mine just a factory freak? Thanks for any help!
Apparently you didn't see his thread. If ya did, it would have been nice if you mentioned that you were AWARE of the problem.
So, his response made sense..at least to me.

No I did see his thread and he is entitled to his opinion. And it is just an opinion. The threads I was referring to were people with this particular intake because people with this particular intake don't seem to be getting any CEL and minimal fuel trim problems. I posted because I wasn't aware of getting a CEL with this intake.

Had the same crap happen to me with the K&N drop filter after it been chilling awhile in my closet when I sold my Hahn and later down the road had issues like LIMP, boost reduction, and some misfiring activities until I went back to stock airbox filter. Cleaned the MAF sensor with some CRC, later went down the road and snatched me up a AEM revision intake and later might get MAF tuned out. AEM intake has been running great in my car without any issues so far. Just check out your K&N install setup and go back to the instructions to see if everything is on right and try again.

I know you said you rotated your filter, but if it helps, my filter is positioned so that the filter hangs down from the tube (since the opening on the filter is on the edge of the cone). Maybe there was some air turbulence type problems when flowing past the MAF. That's the best I can think of even though it's probably wrong.

Hope all goes well with a fix.

I have the exact same issue, if I just cruise with the gas enough to keep the car going, it will trigger this code. Power down and back up and good times again. I figured it was probably due to me running the old tune for 3 days before I got the new tune from Vince (Trifecta), went from Injen CAI to K&N. So I thought I may have just screwed up my TMAP sensors. I will actually be replacing my TMAP sensors this week with the 3 bar GMSI sensors and retuning, but now I am worried that it may not correct it. I will keep posted what happens when I do.

P0101 is normally a boost leak. It can be a bad MAF sensor but 9 times out of 10 it is a boost leak.

X 2 my friend did a Maf relocation and block off plate install on Saturday, I went to install the revised Trifecta tune for maf relocation and we went for a spin to do the data logs the car wouldn’t boost past 5psi went back and check and the maf wasn't screw tightly creating a boost leak. We tighten the screws turn the car on and everything went back to normal!

CHECK FOR BOOST LEAKS!

I had a problem with a boost leak and received the code p0236, which I thought was the tmap sensor reading this. I have then replaced both the hot and cold side charge piping with zzp charge pipes. I charged the system up to 18lbs and it held so I don't think I had a boost leak anymore. I will check again as I am stage one so my car spikes to about 24lbs of boost & holds about 20lbs. Thanks for all the help guys!
