Cleaning Valves with Head off

Any tips, I'm taking the Head off, Can i just go to town on the valves? Any cleaner Recommendations?

walnut blast them in a well ventilated area

Seems like if you blew out the ports afterward with compressed air that you wouldn't have any issues.
