Cold Air Intake

Well I got frustrated and did my own cold air intake. What started this was I removed the induction tube that goes into the air box (the one under the headlight) I saw a improvement in spool and saw a couple pounds more boost out of the gate until it learned back to 15.5. Once I saw that I started studying the air filter assy. I got frustrated there is no CAI available so I did my own using spectra parts and a spectra 12 inch cone filter.(I had to make a special adapter to hold the MAF sensor) I went out to drive it and out of the gate 19.5 LBS boost. Now it did learn back to 15.5 but its off the line spool is nothing short of spectacular. This baby spools RFN. Bottom end launch is off the chain and you can hear the BOV now bigtime. The other thing I noticed is my instant fuel econ went from 34 at 70 MPH to 38.
I'll take a pic of the setup tomorrow for you.

P.S. My opinion does not reflect the position of General Motors and does have the potential to void your warranty. A CAI should only be used for off road only.

******* sweet dude..

I cannot wait to get a TurboTech CAI for it.

BOV sound= sweet IMO... glad to hear that opening up some airways on this turbo'D Balt' does some sweet ****, o yeah... there is also the power gains!

TurboTech CAI due out this September.

Do CAI USUALLY void warranties.. or is it a "depends on your dealer" type rig?

If it voids the warranty for my engine and the turbo.. then not worth it.

depends on the dealer, if they can find a way to blame the CAI, they will.

You should have tried puttin a K&N panel drop in filter, I know of at least 2 members that put it on their 08 immediately after taking delievery of the car with great results. Better MPG and you can hear the spool and BOV much better.............of course a full CAI is going to sound better and net better power/torque/MPG but for all who can't wait for a CAI just run to your local autozone and grab an upgraded panel drop in filter like K&N or AEM dryflow.

I'll post some pics later today when I get home from work.

I started with a drop in K&N but the CAI flows way higher.

Thats awsome. How did you use the maf with your custom intake it seems that you would either have to cut the end of the intake tube near the airbox or make you own custom tube of the same diameter so as to not throw the maf off?
Be careful what kind of filter you use because the oil from K&N and other cotton gauze filters can ruin a maf, it happened to my 99 mustang gt, and no I did not over oil it.

It has a 6in ODX12 inch long cone filter under the headlamp but I'm not pulling it out to take a picture. Yes I had to build my own MAF adapter to the tube. They sell a MAF tube but the adapters are not the correct ones and the hole has to be modified in the tube. Its built off Spectre Modular parts.

Joe Panion Chevrolet. Whelan had one on order but I bought mine from Panion because it came in first.

Thanks Guys. Boy you sure can hear the BOV and turbo spool now. Its almost as loud as an open air BOV but only when you really get on it.

Were you looking at one at Panion The one I bought was still in the yard when I went to pick it up. They haden't even started new car prep on it. They recieved a black one and the red one I bought.(their first 2) The black one was sold and some guy was flying in from Cali to get it and drive it back. I felt bad cuz there was a guy trying to work a trade in on a SS/SC when we came in. I guess the trade didn't work out for him so I wrote a check for it and drove it home.

No, it was at Whalen, but supposedly was traded to Panion or Lunghammer.

It still had all the plastic on it for the test drive.

I will also second that I have at least heard claims from a few other members as well that a drop in K&N filter does noticeably affect the sound of the turbo spooling and the by-pass valve.

Without potentially voiding the warranty..... huge for me.
