coolant flush/ change
coolant flush/ change
i usually don't post asking questions but can anyone help me on the topic? can't find the drain plug on my 09 turbo, how do you flush, drain, replace new coolant on the LNF? thanks.
like just keep the reservior cap open? i'm confused since i can't find a drain plug on this T/C.
and someone please clarify with me if taking out the lower and top radiator hoses are the only way to do it with out using a machine? thanks.

I posted this on another site not too long ago, this is the proceedure from the service manual. This was in reference to changing the thermostat, but same deal.
Obviously I'm shorthanding some of this too. IMO, in addition to GM's proceedure below I would do some "burping" of the system with the surge tank cap off. I've not seen our thermostat yet in person, but it could be a good idea to drill a SMALL hole on the top of it to assist with burping. I've done this on a few cars before that are problematic to bleed.
Draining:
OKAY, so in the service manual for the Cobalt/HHR they show two coolant drains. There is the standard drain petcock on the radiator (bottom) and then if you need to drain the block, they show a drain on bottom of the water pump. Its bellow the hard pipe that crosses the back of the engine on the bottom of the water pump housing. Obviously you'll want to drain your coolant there unless you want a giant fiasco when you remove the thermostat housing.
Filling:
The manual says to unhook the upper radiator hose from the radiator, and fill the engine itself first though that. It says to add coolant through that hose until the engine is full and you can put no more in the hose. It then says to reattach the hose to the radiator.
After the hose has been reattached, it then says to add coolant to the surge tank until its 3/4" above the "cold" line. Replace the cap on the surge tank.
Start engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. If the DIC or RPD says the temp is > 230oF turn off engine. Run engine at 2000-2500 RPM for 3 minutes and then allow engine idle for 30 seconds. Shut engine off and wait 5 minutes. Top off coolant in surge tank as needed.
Turn heater to full.
Start engine and allow it to reach operating temperature. If the DIC or RPD says the temp is > 230oF turn off engine. Idle engine for 5 minutes. Shut engine off and wait 5 minutes. Top off coolant in surge tank as needed.
Inspect cooling system for leaks.
Inspect and top off coolant for next two driving/heating cycles.
