I probably dont want it to 100% now, but I rather see 100%. I'm never gonna go by this, I'm gonna get it changed every 2500-3000 miles, just seeing 29% I get irritated.

its the oil life. and if this is your first oil change u should have changed it at like 2000 miles. GM made that indicator for the people who buy cars and have no clue about maintenance. all they know is how to drive it. my brother works for chevy he told me all about it when i had my first balt.

Do people really not read the owners manual? Or even the gauge it says Oil Life, how could someone be confused.
This is not correct, refer to the owners manual:
You change your oil way too much. I have almost 4000 miles on my current oil change and am at only 50%. It all depends on how many cold starts, how long you drive with it warmed up, what kind of driving you are doing, etc.

When to Change Engine Oil
This vehicle has the Engine Oil Life System, a computer
system that indicates when to change the engine oil
and filter. This is based on engine revolutions and
engine temperature, and not on mileage. Based on
driving conditions, the mileage at which an oil change is
indicated can vary considerably. For the oil life system
to work properly, the system must be reset every
time the oil is changed.
When the system has calculated that oil life has been
diminished, it indicates that an oil change is necessary.
A CHANGE OIL SOON message comes on. See DIC
Warnings and Messages on page 3-46. Change the oil as
soon as possible within the next 600 miles (1 000 km).
It is possible that, if driving under the best conditions, the
oil life system might not indicate that an oil change is
necessary for over a year. However, the engine oil and
filter must be changed at least once a year and at this
time the system must be reset. Your dealer/retailer has
trained service people who will perform this work using
genuine parts and reset the system. It is also important to
check the oil regularly and keep it at the proper level.
If the system is ever reset accidentally, the oil must be
changed at 3,000 miles (5 000 km) since the last oil
change. Remember to reset the oil life system whenever
the oil is changed.
How to Reset the Engine Oil Life
System
The Engine Oil Life System calculates when to change
your engine oil and filter based on vehicle use. Whenever
the oil is changed, reset the system so it can calculate
when the next oil change is required. If a situation occurs
where the oil is changed prior to a CHANGE OIL SOON
message being turned on, reset the system.
After changing the engine oil, the system must be reset:
1. Turn the ignition to ON/RUN, with the engine off.
2. Press the information and reset buttons on the
Driver Information Center (DIC) at the same
time to enter the personalization menu. See DIC
Vehicle Personalization on page 3-52.
3. Press the information button to scroll through the
available personalization menu modes until the
DIC display shows OIL-LIFE RESET.
4. Press and hold the reset button until the DIC
display shows ACKNOWLEDGED. This will tell you
the system has been reset.
5. Turn the key to LOCK/OFF.
If the CHANGE OIL SOON message comes back on
when the vehicle is started, the engine oil life system
has not reset. Repeat the reset procedure.

^^ Yeah, you no longer can reset the oil life with the foot pedal any more. Took me a while to figure out why it wouldn't work, then just started pushing and holding buttons and figured it out. It's man law to not read an owners manual or direction sheet!

what do you mean you cant reset uses the pedal thats all i do at work! put the key into run position with the car off slowly key word depress the pedal three times fully. the only cars ive seen in which u cant use this on is like 02 w bodies wich you reset through the radio.

most cars or trucks will go 5 to 7k miles before an oil change is really needed. i wait till my tahoe tells me change oil soon and when i change it the oil still looks, feels, and smells brand new. and my tahoe has over 100k on it.

Its killing me that I have not changed my oil since I bought it in Aug 08 but I just rolled to 3100 miles and have just under 50%. I am use to changing the oil out of my Buick every 2k miles but my Cobalt can wait as is my 10 quarts of Q Horsepower oil waiting to be used.

Exactly, I know guys who are religious as hell about changing their oil every 2000 miles, and some even less. I usually change mine every 2500-3000, but hardly anymore. I actually went over 10,000 miles without changing my oil in my 2001 Mustang GT I used to have. It totally slipped my mind and it was like a whole year before I realized it and it was just over 10,000 since the last one, LOL. Never had any problems out of it either.
