Crankshaft wobble/deflection? Problem?

So after taking a look at my motor while it was running I noticed that my crank pulley had quite a bit of a wobble/deflection in it. So being concerned I took a look at my brothers 08 SS/TC that i'm storing in my garage and turned it on to check his crankshaft pulley and it is noticeably more stable than mine is...

Now my question is, should this be a concern, cause as of right now it is bugging the crap outta me!! Has anyone else noticed this?

Could it just be the paint or dirt on the pulley making it look that way?

Your crank isn't bent. If it was, your motor would probably have came apart by now.

Possible causes include markings that make the pulley appear to wobble (as mentioned) or a bent pulley.

don't think it's dirt.. it's a pretty noticeable difference, I stood there looking between the two for 10 minutes.

I never said my crank was bent, I'm just concerned as to why there is a difference between my car and my brothers.

You said "crankshaft wobble". Thats not the crank wobbling, its the pulley.

I'm not all that familiar with the harmonic dampners on these engines, but its possible yours has gone bad. Many have rubber components, and when they become damaged, they look crooked because the two parts of the balancer are split.

is the tensioner bouncing more on one car than the other?

don't see how my dampener could be damage.. I have never raced the car, just daily it.. I'll have to take a closer look at it tomorrow when it's lighter out..

I generalized my topic statement to crankshaft wobble, I know my crank isn't bent.. If it were I'd be having alot more problems than a "wobble"

Both the tensioners looked the same, only difference was in the crank pulley

could be just an optical illusion of some kind. The tensioner should react to an eccentric crank pulley.

Is the bolt wobbly? If so, it's an imbalanced clutch, excessively worn main bearings, or bent/broke crank.

Don't focus on the front of the pulley so much as where the ribs for the belt are. If that part appears to be wobbling its possible that the outer part of the pulley has separated from the rubber insulator and the hub.

Definitely something to get looked at because it could throw/shred the belt.

What I noticed on these harmonic balancers is that the inner hub and outer ribs are part of the same casting. The rubber part seems to be an internal lining, and gets no torque load. I doubt that it could start to separate unless it got real dry-rotted.

With that said I noticed mine wobbles too with no internal problems. After tracing a vibration issue for 2 months it turned out to be a failed balancing shaft tensioner.

If it's THAT bad I would think you could feel it. Now it may only be felt at certain rpms just like when your wheel is out of balance and don't notice until you're on the highway.

I've had a Pontiac that I could rev to about 2100-2200 rpms and feel it shaking. (but couldn't feel it driving) Never did actually figure it out but it ran for freaking ever.

Anyway, have a seat in it and gently rev it up the range slowly and see if you actually feel it.
