Electric Cutout Discussion
I have an 08 SS/TC and prior to getting my Trifecta tune I wanted to get an exhaust. My friend mentioned that I should just get an electric cutout so my car doesn't look like a rice puff with a giant fart can hanging out the back bumper which I'm all for. It would cost less than a full exhaust and there would be no restriction whatsoever due to running straight headers when the cutout is opened. My questions that I have are 1.) does anyone have an electric cutout on their SS/TC? 2.) where is it installed on the exhaust? 3.) what bolt-ons do you have along with what tune? 4.) What brand of cutout system did you install? 5.) Where'd you mount the activation switch?
The bolt-ons I have are:
TurboXS Catless DP
Dejon Charge Pipes
Forge BPV
Hahn Racecraft CAI
And I would get the tune specifically for only when the cutout is open.
Good idea? Bad idea? Need some constructive criticism cobalt nation.
Thanks,
Jordan F.

Agreed with kdub... But a catless downpipe not catted.. My buddy has a electric cut out 3 in and it is loud... And helps
Performance too. Very loud and you can
Hear the turbo chirp and click and do all sorts of crazy things.. I'm thinking of just doing a full 3 in side dump..
Now another buddy of mine has the 252et and be has a 3.5in open cut out and that's by far the nastiest cobalt I have ever heard

IMHO if your going for sound, get a 3 inch turboxs or MPX exhaust. If your going for best overall performance get a electric cut out.

I'm not going to be caught up over sound, I am more focused on the performance aspect of the electric cut out. Correct me if I'm wrong but wouldn't there be a noticeable increase in power if choosing the cut out over an aftermarket exhaust?

I had electric cut out.. has donkeysballs stated - it is a waste of money, yea it sounds crazy during start up even at a light.. but you run the risk of getting a ticket on the street..
but on the other hand - it will gain some HP around 2-3 during track runs - but the idea is for quick release of exhaust gas & heat - but you also need the exhaust gas & heat for the turbo to spin efficiently during the rpm range [less turbo lag], if the back pressure isn't there to spin the turbine/compressor, then your not going to spin the turbo correctly or efficiently, which cause more turbo lag in the low / mid rpm ranges as well in the long run..
which could also cause turbo failure.. which I had - massive exhaust leak and oil starvation in the center bearing housing.. ouch!! at a cost of $1200 bucks to replace the turbo.. for the turbo to sound sweet?

i also am about to order an hahn catless down pipe with electric cut out for my 2010 sstc i mainly want it just to sound it off every now and then dont really plan on having the cut out open a whole lot
when closed it should still make more power over the stock down pipe right?
sorry im new

Why would getting a aftermarket muffler make it look rice canny? U wouldn't even see the muffler. And honestly I have heard all the exhausts, I think stock with cats sounds by far the best. Without cat sounds good but a little to raspy in mid throttle.

Just run a mufflered side exit. I'm running cmiller's old side exit with a magnaflow bullet muffler on it(practically a glass pack) and it sounds great, not raspy at all and pretty loud. They sound pretty good on the stock turbo as well. Just be prepared for it to be loud when you stomp it. It's also legal if it exits right in front of the rear wheel. Has to be past the passenger compartment in most states and that practically is almost unless a cop just wants to be an ass. I've never had any issues with it though and have been pulled over twice with it. Once for stomping it and bad control arm bushings throwing me in the other lane and the other time for dark tint. Both have been fixed, lol.
