Engine Swap

Simple and straight up. I have a 2009 2.0 LNF motor that’s basically done for.
I live on Guam and there are no other 2.0 cobalts or actually any cobalts, g5, or other related models with the cobalt on Guam In the junkyards so I can’t find a replacement for the exact motor.

Can I grab one from a Malibu 2.4? I know they both ecotec but can I just bolt it on and call it a day or are there electric complications?

my local Chevy dealership is asking for $20,000 for just the engine.

so, I am thinking about grabbing a 2.4 from a Malibu, and build from there.

I know a cobalt has 2.0/2.2/2.4 engines.

But is there any difference from a 2.4 cobalt and a 2.4 Malibu engine?

I know freight might be crazy, but zzp sells an LDK long block that would work for around 2k. The 2.4 as is i dont think will work.

do you know what's failing? judging from the location it sounds like it'll be cheaper to rebuild that than swap in a new crate engine. i was about $3000 usd to swap my LDK crate engine in, zzp doesn't sell complete either, still needs fuel, manifolds, throttle body.

The base 2.4 engine would work but not without changing a few things. If youre tuned or make any more power than stock a 2.4 wouldnt really be useful anyway. If you have parts available to order, rebuilding is a good choice.

doesn’t it use a different ECU and likely a different wiring harness (no turbo solenoids). I don’t think it would work.

You would use the LNF ecu and wiring.... The engine itself is basically the same besides DI and the LNF has stronger internals.

Im not saying he should go this route but it is possible to make it work if you had to.

Rebuild it then?

it would not work, you cant use the di ecu with a port injected engine, plus he would have to basically rewire the car.

im sure zzps shipping to him would not be anywhere near what that ripoff of a dealer is charging. Ldk engine would be best bet, that lnf could have porus block so pointless to fix it.

Omfg, obviously you would have to swap the heads. I never said it was a direct swap....

"Base engine," meaning the short block is compatible.

oh, lol ya I guess that would work. people use the 2.4 block for 2.1 builds so why not. don't think 2.2 works though. not sure

2.2 crank reluctor is the same as lnf but 2.2 hold way less power than the 2.4
