FWD vs. AWD Pull

Is it true that two cars with identical horse power with one being awd and the other fwd, the awd will pull you back more to your seat? I test drove a bone stock sti and that thing was pulling me back hard even after 45mph punch. And rwd, I think they pull you back harder too in terms of displacement.

I think it has a lot to do with how well the torque is being applied. The AWD hooks up better than a FWD car on launch so it is probably going to feel like it pulls harder. After launch, the FWD may feel like it pulls harder.

All in how they hook up... identical hp means of the three, AWD is going to get the least power to the wheels, but will get the highest percentage of that to the ground, assuming identical tires.

Assuming same body/engine weight/gearing/etc.

If traction is a factor (wheel spin) AWD will (99% likely) accelerate faster.

If traction is not a factor (no wheel spin) FWD will accelerate faster, the extra drive line components in AWD add weight and increase frictional and inertia losses.

My ss/tc is about 290 @ the wheels, I punched it in 2nd at 40mph and hooked up uintil 5.2k rpms and I did the same thing on a stock STi it pulled alot harder even tho I was in 3rd at 40mph when I gunned it. I dont get it I have more torque, car hooked to certain rpms yet I didnt feel the pull as great as the AWD.

as said above, assuming traction is NOT an issue (IE neither car spins or hops or anything) such as from a higher speed roll, then the FWD car willbe the fastest.

another thing to take into account though is do both cars have identical gearing? Cause the answer here is almost certainly no.

We're not discussing speed here, but whether which car pulls you back to the seat more, clearly the stock sti I test drove will get smoked by my balt because im not stock but it seems to pull harder even from a 40 roll

could have to do with more displacement. The low end tourqe probably hits faster in the sti and thats why it feels faster.

STI's have very aggressive low end gearing. If you were to do that from a 60 mph roll, you wouldnt feel the same.

Honestly the AWD platform that sees the least amount of top end power loss is the EVO. The EVO has a higer RL and better all around gearing.

it could also have to do with how the ss/tc pulls boost smoother than an STI.

The sti seems to have rubber band boost

True that. I also drove my douchebag's friends stock m3 (notice the corelation douchebag and m3 haha) anyways it seems to pull you back pretty good also. I guess its just fwd that doesnt pull back hard even if it hooks.

none of my statement had anything to do with speed. unless you meant it will be faster?
well...new for you. the amount you get pulled back in your seat is directly proportional to how fast your accelerating...so yea..i answered your question

Not true, when I raced my buddies sti (different one 3202whp)and beat hime, my other friend was with me who drove the sti also said he didnt feel the pull even tho I won. It was a race from 50-110 and even though I started in 2nd.

The sensation of pulling is caused by G forces. G forces directly relate to acceleration.

Some say gradual constant increasing G forces feel like the strongest pull, as you are accelerating over a longer period of time, but the magnitude of accel would be less, meaning you would actually be going slower. This type of bulling FYI is what a lot of turbo cars or high revving hondas deliver.

at the end of the day though, instantaneous pulling is proportional to instantaneous accel.

Hell, there are products that measure the amount of G forces you're pulling in the car and calculate acceleration and HP off of it.

Yep you're right, didnt mean to argue like that, there was a misunderstanding on my side.

two different kinds of pulls, it is a relative situation.

a friend of mine gad a 180 hp turbo saturn sc2. that mother ****** would pin you in the seat. the reason was turbo lag. the boost hit you out of nowhere. my mustang felt faster than my ss, but thats because the tq was instant on the gt. another thing that makes on car feel faster is noise and how smooth the ride is. a lot can contribute to a car "feeling" faster.
