how badly did i break my car?!

Last week i put in the updated timing chain tensioner on my 05 ss supercharged. Not knowingly i put the timing chain tensioner in fully extended / how ever it came from the factory. Now at 2-3k rpms at a sit still i can hear the chain slaping the **** out of my engine. I dont know if it was fully extended when i put it in and i stretched the chain out in about 500 miles, or if i need to set the timing chain tensioner. If it helps when i put the tensioner in i had to push against alot of resistance to get it started in the threads. Please Help!

sounds like it was extended. as long as you didn't bend any valves you should be able to get away with just replacing the chain, guides, and the tensioner. but you should take it apart and inspect it.

did you take the cam cover off and take a bar and push on the chain and guide assembley up against the tensioner to release it because the new tensioners come full compressed and need to be released. I hope u did that if not your tensioner isnt doing **** for it is still in locked posion(install position) and not putting any tension on chain...

I am a gm mechanic and i jus did one yesterday

listen to Sheldon, i too am a Gm Tech, take your valve cover off and use a bar and release the tensioner from Install Position Yo. If it damaged anything youd be not running right now due to Interference and all.

Jus take a bar and force the chain and guide back against the tensioner at least 2mm and let it go. I just took a 36" 3/8 extension and taped up the end so it didnt mark up the chain and put it up against the chain/guide assembly and i took a dead blow hammer and wacked it and its good to go

This is the complete GM proceedure!!!!! Follow it or be prepared for the Consequences


Timing Chain Tensioner Replacement

Removal Procedure

Disconnect the negative battery cable.
Remove the camshaft cover.
Remove the timing chain tensioner.
Remove the seal from the tensioner.

Installation Procedure

Inspect the timing chain tensioner. If the timing chain tensioner, O-ring seal, or washer is damaged, replace the timing chain tensioner or O-ring seal as applicable.
Measure the timing chain tensioner assembly from end to end. If the timing chain tensioner is to be replaced, a new tensioner should be supplied in the fully compressed non-active state. A tensioner in the compressed state will measure 72 mm (2.83 in) (a) from end to end. A tensioner in the active state will measure 85 mm (3.35 in) (a) from end to end.
If the timing chain tensioner is not in the compressed state, perform the following steps:

*NOTE:IF this needs to be done you have to take it to GM dealershop due to you dont got proper tools to reset the tensioner.

Inspect the bore of the tensioner body for dirt, debris, and damage. If any damage appears, replace the tensioner. Clean dirt or debris out with a lint-free cloth.
Install the compressed piston assembly back into the timing chain tensioner body until it stops at the bottom of the bore. Do not compress the piston assembly against the bottom of the bore. If the piston assembly is compressed against the bottom of the bore, it will activate the tensioner, which will then need to be reset again.
At this point the tensioner should measure approximately 72 mm (2.83 in) (a) from end to end. If the tensioner does not read 72 mm (2.83 in) (a) from end to end, repeat steps 3-5.
Inspect to ensure all dirt and debris is removed from the timing chain tensioner threaded hole in the cylinder head.
Notice: Refer to Fastener Notice in the Preface section.
Important: Ensure the timing chain tensioner seal is centered throughout the torque procedure to eliminate the possibility of an oil leak.
Install the timing chain tensioner assembly.
Tighten
Tighten the timing chain tensioner to 75 Nˇm (55 lb ft).
The timing chain tensioner is released by compressing the tensioner 2 mm (0.079 in) which will release the locking mechanism in the ratchet. To release the timing chain tensioner, use a suitable tool with a rubber tip on the end. Feed the tool down through the cam drive chest to rest on the cam chain. Then give a sharp jolt diagonally downwards to release the tensioner.
Install the camshaft cover
Connect the negative battery cable
