K&N Drop-In MAF question
K&N Drop-In MAF question
For those with the K&N Drop-In filter, has anyone experienced any problems with the MAF sensor? Just want to know if people are experiencing skewed MAF readings like I've read occurring with some of the aftermarket intakes.
I've seen as much as -7 LTFT with a K&N drop in and the superchips tune, usually it sits around -5 . I can't say if it's the tune or the filter thou. Maybe ill throw my stock filter back in and see what it reads.
It should not be the tune causing the LTFTs to be that negative. Mine is -1 to -2 with the stock filter but removing the filter it went to -7 to -8. I attribute that to the airflow turbulance because there is no filter element to straighten the airflow. CP leak can cause negative fuel trims too.
A LITTLE off topic... I just checked my K&N drop in. It's got nearly 25K miles on the filter. I was happy to see the whole filter was equally dirty. In the past even with cone filters I seemed to have a problem where one part of the filter took the majority of the airflow. Therefore it got the most dirty, and much faster. This is nice and even.

Mine doesn't have the miles on it that yours does but ..... I can see one area that is getting dirty . It's not even at all , I'll get a picture of it today
Will do .
I've run almost every combination you can imagine. K&N-Snorkle (runs fine no issues)Short CAI/W MAF in stock position(Works Fine, Tip in throttle whistle is annoying as ****) Long CAI/W MAF in stock location and filter down in the pocket.(Ran Like Dog ****, LT fuel trims all outa whack) Long CAI with MAF moved 6 inches further downstream (the best as far as a CAI setup, however high risk of sucking water because it shoots right past the fog lamp at the filter) And currently Stock Airbox-Snorkle with full 3 inch tube froom the turbo to the airbox with a KN drop in. (This is the best so far. Stable fuel trims, No whistle, and I can tell it flows as hard as a full cai or a shorty)
I am using a modular system so I can move pieces all around.
Dropping the snorkle is job numero uno if your keeping the stock airbox. By the way -5 plus 5 is no big deal and to be expected in normal operation. When you start seeing -15 to-17 or +15 to +17 type LTFT's something ain't happy.
I am a GM engineer and my opinions are my own.

Well after reseting my fuel trims and putting 200 miles on the stock filter......my long term is at 0. The K&N was sitting right around-5.5 but i've seen -7 LTFT's in the past . So what do you guy's think stay with the stocker or put the K&N back in ? Thanks
One thing i did when i put the stock filter back in was trim the snorkel where it comes into the air box. The snorkel had a big lip that went inward ....hard to explain but on the inside of the opening that comes into the air box there was a lip of curled in plastic ....which was making the opening smaller . So i just trimmed it out and made the inlet smooth. This prolly wont make any sense but thats it lol.
Oh and the foam that is supposed to seal the snorkel to the air box was sticking out where the ends of the foam meet , i could see day light looking down threw the air box where the snorkel comes in . So I'm gunna test the K&N again and see where the trim's end up.

Stay with the stock filter.
