k&n intake problem

I installed it yesterday and today my car shut off with the oil light on, when I drive at higher speeds and let the car decellerate on its own I get 2 or 3 really loud backfires and it feels like its knocking. I had a k&n filter on the stock intake and I am tuned. Do you think all I need is a retune or could it be something else?

Most likely will need to be re-tuned. It probably threw off the fuel trims.

If you get tuned, you really NEED to get retuned if you change intakes. Some people may get luckly and be able to get away with it, but when you tune the car to work closely with a certain intake system, changing it will really throw off your fuel trims. Get re-tuned asap.

Another tip that seems to have helped people is to make sure the metal seam in the cone filter is facing nearly straight up (towards the hood) 11-1 'o' clock. Where the filter fits onto the pipe is not dead center if you'll notice.

I forget who it was but someone put in the time and effort to data log and found that to be the best position.

I went to get returned and its still doing the same thing. A/f looks perfect no knock but the car jerks bad at 2000 rpm and it backfires alot. I'm thinking about going back to stock intake unless I can get it figured out, thanks for the help so far

I don't think it would affect all of them because IIRC the injen filter is a perfectly round cone shape where the K&N is not, and it's a cai, so the airflow has more time to smooth out when it passes over the MAF than the K&N does. That's why turning the filter makes such a difference because the filter is so close to the MAF.

How's your spark plugs?

When my MAF was going bad it did this same thing but if your A/F is spot on then that's probably not it.

ill check them but it was fine before i installed the K&N. does any one else have any ideas on what is causing the jerking. Another thing that happened was im not able to boost past 4LBs and theres a huge power loss. I really wanna make the intake work but if i cant im gonna sell it

I put the stock intake back on and its perfect again. No jerking or loss of power. I did notice when I pulled out the maf there was a finger print on it, I cleaned it before I put the stock intake back on. Do you guys think the finger print caused the issues I was having?

Well.. Why not install the K&N one more time and see what happens? Rule it all out man. Speculation is moot at this point because it sounds like you want it to work, so give it another try?

I just want to say it and I know its a dumb question to ask but... did you put the MAF in backwards on the intake? do it to any car and you get the same crazy result. bad idling, jerking, etc... could be the thumbprint but I doubt it. it would have to be ON the sensor.

Were you tuned before putting this intake on, because if you were then thats probably the issue if it isnt human error.

read the OP again. I had the K&N panel filter on my stock intake as well before switching over to a K&N intake, worked fine for me but I wasnt tuned.
How do you have the filter positioned? I never had knocking, low boost... just really bad fuel trims. The low boost is a tripped engine code. You need to clear your DTCs and reinstall the intake. Did you unhook the battery and re hook it up after the install?

i was tuned before it, but i did the airbox mod with a K&N drop in, i went to get retuned for the K&N and was getting the same results. A/F was good but the car was still jerking, I didnt screw the MAF in myself but when i took it out silver side was on top. I cleared all DTCs twice and same thing happened. When i first installed the filter i didnt pay attenton to how it was positioned, then after reading about it I made sure the K&N logo was upside down. The jerking while I wasnt on the gas wasnt knock it was just jerking, and after confirming that through HPT i was really lost. im gonna try and install it tomorrow againf and see if it still does the same thing. any other advice for the install? Thanks guys
