LNF Stock Air Box Cone Filter Mod
LNF Stock Air Box Cone Filter Mod
Alright, I came across a free factory air box from an LNF Cobalt, had a K&N cone filter lying around and had some free time, so I made the best of it if you want to call it that.
I did this on the idea of, well I was board but a theory of the tuning on these cars. I know this still needs to be tuned, but I liked the idea of the MAF sensor in the factory location, with the correct sized tube, and factory air box clamped in.
The air filter I had and traced to the air box was a K&N RE-0930. After I traced and cut the box, I could not get this filter to fit. It has a 3 inch inlet, and the factory air box inlet on the MAF tube was slightly bigger. I ended up ordering a K&N RC-9160 and it fit perfect. The only thing I wish is I cut the top part of the air box a little shorter to accommodate this filter because it is a bit shorter than the one I traced but oh well.
I have been driving with this for 5 days now, and there is no check engine light, no shutter, no bog or any other drivability issues. Although that is just off what I fell, I don't know what it is actually doing in the tune and will still need to be checked. The only mod I have done to my car is a ZZP 1.0 PCM with 3 bar sensors, tuned for factory air box. Turbo and BOV are now much louder obviously, and sounds close to all the aftermarket ones.
All in all it was a cost effective mod. The filter was $40 shipped off ebay.

I guarantee it's a nicer sound, I remember my L61 you could hear the throttle body whistling at part throttle. Performance might be a little better, but if it is the tune kicks it back down. My worry is it's skewing the MAF readings.
I cant see any performance benefit really. Your not smoothing out the slinky in the pipe plus i dont think it looks good either. Thats just an opinion though.
If it works for you cool

Just wanted to share with the community. I know I know I know fuel trims and bla bla bla no performance gains, etc and all the negativity that comes with owning one of these cars, but I had time to kill and a freebee on my hand. It runs absolutely fine, it SOUNDS like a turbo car now and if it had drivability issues I would have taken it off and never made this post. Just like my last 4 LS1/LS6 cars, first thing it had to do was sound like a V8.
I'm happy!
I'm happy!
