Need help with ECU

I am about to buy a used ECU from a member on here(HB_SS/TC) and I would like to know what all do I need to get my VIN put on to that ECU so I can get a tune on it.
Would trifecta be able to do that if I mailed them my ECU, I also have a local tuner here and would he be able to load my VIN on to the spare ECU? Thanks, all info appreciated.

Hey, another Kansas Cobalt. Pretty sure if you do this with HP Tuners.

Heres a novel idea.... Email or call Vince at Trifecta!

In the time you've spent waiting on this thread, you could have alreaady had your answer.

What was the answer?

I believe that Vince just tunes your car with the existing VIN. He doesn't actually change the VIN on the ECU to match the car. I don't know how he gets around it. If I did, I'd be a tuner.

since the ecu is used, hpt can do this. You can go in and change the vin. I think vince could do it as well. but you'd have to mail it in.

I live between Topeka and Emporia.

I have HP Tuners, but I'm a noob. I think you have to "read entire" from the original ECU (just like you have to do if you want to license it and modify the tune). Normally, when you flash changes you just "write calibration only". But, if you want the new ECU to be exactly like the old ECU, open the old tune and use "write entire" instead on the new ECU (must be installed of course). After that, you can just do the "write calibration only" to make changes which is safer.

Same question: I've already had my car tuned (Vince sent the stock tune and custom tune), now Im getting another ECU. Do I just load the stock tune first then do the custom?

Vince writes the tune for a specific ECU via the electronic serial number (or its equal) hard coded into it, you will have to get him to send you a modified version for the new ECU.

One tune, one ECU.

Another thing to keep in mind with HP Tuners is that it requires 2 credits for a Cobalt SS/TC. If you are tuning two ECUs, that requires 4 credits. Each credit is $50, so 2 ECUs will cost $200 just for the credits, not counting what the tuner charges for labor.
