New HeadGasket: Break-in???

Hi,

Just wanting to know if with a New Headgasket I need to put the car through a Break-in period of Mileage or Re-Trq head etc. Just wanting to make sure that this New one seals perfect. Thanks

^^ I never know what the hell this kid is ever trying to say....

anyways....

There is no break-in period for changing a head gasket. Once you torque the head you are good to go

^this

But always as a precaution, I've always let the car get up to FULL operating temp before I drive it after a head gasket (About 189 degrees). Just me being paranoid, but you'll be good no matter what.

I do too on a daily basis, but I'm telling the OP that my paranoid ass lets a car sit at idle until it gets up to full operating temp or if the cooling fans kick on for it first cycle after a head gasket job.

It's not needed, but I do it out of purely being **** lol.

the only break-in will be making sure the car is warm before you beat on it... thats it... once its warm you're good to go.

Not a good idea to do on any recent GM engine. All the head-bolts are torque-to-yield.

IE. 22 ft/lbs + 75 degrees.

The weird thing about all this was that I blew this headgasket on my car with only 5200 miles. After thinking about it and reading what you guys had to say, one thing that I grew a bad habbit was that going to work I woudn't give the car time to really warm up(cause of long idle times) and as I would be getting on the highway every now and then I would WOT. I think with the headgasket being cold and doing that, I blew the headgasket. Well, lessons learned.

If you use ARP studs its a good idea to re-torque but otherwise no.

If there was a break-in period, too late for me . The dealer replaced mine only because the entire head came off and I think it took me a whopping 15 seconds of having the car back to romp on it after having a slow as hell rental for a week. No oil leaks around the head gasket, my valvecover on the other hand, it's going back. I'd say the gasket didn't seat properly there .

Well with my blown gasket I didn't have oil leaking either but it was blown.

So were you ending up with coolant in the oil, etc then?

Hmm, guess I'm in the clear then, car sounds fine, nothing leaking internal or external that would indicate head gasket failure. I'd imagine you're good to go without worrying about it too much . I asked the dealer if I needed to be nice to the new valves until they sat properly and they said there was no work done to the motor that requires a break-in and to drive it the way I normally would, check for problems, etc. I just assumed they were right until I saw this then started to second-guess for a bit.

It was the head gasket ...????????? Wow I am really lost now .. Without leaking or causing it to pour antifreeze into the oil boggles my mind yet still caused it to sound like a Subaru.

Ok so the Subaru of death noise has now been heard on multiple cars for multiple reasons.

1. Lash Adjusters and rockers going crazy from over revs ( all though I am seeing people with GMS1 and similar stock setups with no raised rev limiter having the same issue possibly from down shifts.

2.Head Gasket Leaking

3.Fried Pistons/ring lands/cracked piston

4. Bad injector/injector seals causing loss of compression , without the seal on it they vibrate rapidly in the bore hole causing the car to sound like a stun gun when getting into boost throwing a misfire code possibly damaging the injector.

These are the current issues I've heard of after people had the Subaru of Death noise. number 4 being me...

coolant wont go to the oil unless the coolant haz higher pressure or temp ^_^
that usually only happen when you turn off the car.

sup guys,

So tomorrow I go and pickup my car from the dealership. I got a call today telling me what they did. They told me that they replaced the headgasket and ONE injector. He told me that my car was running just fine now and that it was ready for pickup. Well, hopefully this is the last thing like this that happens. I'll keep you guys updated when I bring her home tomorrow.
