Problem with using USB for Ipod

I try to use the USB port to play my iPod and it says that it is an unknown device. Does anyone else have this issue? I am always using the first generation iPod, dont know if that is the problem. I am going to try my iTouch and other forms for the USB, just wondering if anyone else came across this issue

I've never tried to use a 1G iPod, but mine does work with a crusty old Nano 4gb fine. Do you have the newest firmware on your iPod?

if i'm not mistaken the first gens don't have the proper support to do it. i know with my aftermarket one you need a special adapter to use a first gen. good thing i don't have a first gen

I should post a how-to (maybe someone already has one? not looked), but I cracked open my head unit and installed an extension USB cable behind the radio to the glovebox. I just keep an old/elcheapo 30GB 2.5" USB hard disk enclosure in there at all times.

Very rare I actually use my iPod/iPhone with the headunit.

i hate wires. i took the time to run my GPS wires behind everything up to the upper/left of my windshield

i hate the wire in the usb hanging out my glovebox.
