Starting the ZFR Build
Starting the ZFR Build
Well, its time I start creating my shopping list for the top end build I am planning for the rest of the summer. First off, my car is a 2009 SS/TC Sedan, mods are in sig. Basically its fully bolted with a few other addons, hp tuned (might stick with that).
My plan is to swap in the ZFR, as well as get the ZZP head/cam package. I am thinking of doing the ZFR swap first, then doing the other stuff once I get more money. So I have a few questions, and hopefully gain some insight or options from you guys. If I swap in the ZFR, and leave the head alone, stock springs/cam and stuff, should I keep the rev limiter where it is, or raise it to 7k? I heard you can rev to 7K on stock springs, long as you stay under 390hp approx. Or should I keep it at the stock limiter? As far as I have read, the ZFR builds boost same time as the K04 does, so it should be full boost by 3k-3500k?
Second, when I am swapping in the ZZP head and cam, that package comes complete with the new upgraded springs, am I correct? All I would need to complete that install is a new head gasket, ARP head studs, and make sure the timing chain is lined up. I do not need to go with the bigger fuel lobe because Ill never run E85.... cant get it up here. Still correct?
Now.. my last question is, if for some reason I choose to do all this at the same time, and I take off the head, will that give me ample more room to do the ZFR swap, or should they be done separately?
Other than that, is there anything else I might need to do as a supporting mod/install to keep the ZFR happy, or am I on the right track?

i wouldnt rev passed 6500 with stock springs and in all honesty some of your questions make me hope that you have some help at what your doing because a head swap isnt for a first timer to go at it alone. take your time and double or triple check everything and make sure its right or else your in for problems. not trying to come off as a dousche i just dont want to see you make a mistake
Gotta have the head on to do the turbo swap. Also, be very careeful hitting high boost down low, especially on the ZFR, or you can add a new trans to the ever growing budget.
Like Omni said, take your time. I think ZZP was over enthusiastic in the 5 hour estimate. Or I'm incompetent. Or maybe a little of both. Took me about 8 hours. Make sure to use a weekend and dont back yourself into a corner time wise, and have fun!
Well I suppose the reason I posted here is because I am a little more in the dark than some on this, and I was looking for answers. Yes I will have help, and yes I will take my time. This isnt the first engine build i have done, just never done one on a turbo platform.
And no Jon, I was going to go with the head and stage 1 cams.
Anyways, there seems to be a plethora of picture/build threads for the ZZP... I shall busy myself with some reading.

if you leave the arp studs out until after you sit the head on the block you MIGHT be able to get the turbo and manifold on with the head but i dont think the turbos going to happen. the 6758 is surprisingly big. you can atleast get the manifold in then thread in the studs and then torque the head down.
if it was me i would do all of this at once and get it done and over with. do the springs and cams with the head or dont rev past 6500 until you get springs.

I rev to 6800 the main difference between the two turbos is this thing pulls insane all the way to redline never falling off! You will want to rev as much as possible. I can't wait to get some springs to go to 7500. 7000 on stock springs is pushing it!
