27F and 2.9"=18psi... winter is upon us

Temps. are dropping low here. (Mid East Ohio). Cluster read 27F outside this morning, and it doesn't feel that much warmer at the moment.

Well, I was on my way to classes this morning, and I take this backwoods asshat route, so boosting and higher speeds is usually nill. That is, until my very brief stint on the highway for about a mile...

I decided "what the hell" and on the off ramp in 2nd opened it up. Boost gauge climbs right up to my usual 15, then right on past. I figure that when it hit around 17-18psi I should back out of it, and did so.

I don't have a wideband in the cabin, and have no idea what my AFRs are at. I'm probably being overly ****, but I'm in no position to blow my motor. My suggestion to everyone out there with any pulley/tuning modifications, would be to re-tune your car for winter (via HPTuners) as 06blackg85ss, and others have suggested. Just me 2 cents.

Just one more reason for me to swap back to the 3.1" for winter....

By the way, you can see from my "mods", that I'm running GM Stage 1. I'd imagine that Stage 1 or Stage 2, with a stock, or Stage 2 pulley would be alright for winter time. No way to really know until you get some sort of AFR readings though.

I have the GM stage flash. I plan on going to a 2.9 in. pulley. Do you guys think that is going to be a serious issue in the coming winter months on Long Island.

What about just regular stage 2 with the 3 in pulley? I cant afford a wideband.

Thats why you have a MAF/IAT sensor, it will tell the engine exactly how much air is getting into your motor, no matter what temp.

I am gonna do some data logs myself just to make sure.

the car will be running more lean than your original tune. How much more is the question. I would find someway to log ur AFR to make sure. Its not uncommon for someone with an aggressive tune in the summer to be way to lean come winter time.

Fueling is based on the MAF, the MAF measures the amount of air entering the engine in pounds of air an hour. If the air is cold it weights more. The computers and most importantly the engineers who built these systems know that.

Check and reset your fuel trims and see if they are different ...

If you can't afford a wideband, just go get a dyno. Only $75 or so.

The whole warning thing kind of went over your head huh? Conditions that are too lean are going to be fast to **** things up with your motor. Id keep your stock stage 2 on there for winter to be safe.

True, but you're still going to get boost spikes. As others have stated, those with an agressive spring/summer tune can/will be running lean during the winter. Ask 06blackg85ss about the few guys he knows who have blown motors so far because of the colder air temps.

BASICALLY, without anyway to monitor AFRs, you have no idea how lean/rich the car is running. Its going to run leaner the colder out it is, just because of air density, etc. Those with an agressive tune should check out their AFRs. Im just giving you all a heads up so you don't go leaning out and blowing it sky high...

if the engine is running to lean or to rich the ckeck engine light should come one. that is partilly what your 02 sensor is for.
