Lightbulb Airbox Mod

Just had the SS airbox out and cut about a 5 inch square hole in the front of the box. You want to hear about a screaming supercharger . Performance feels a bit better as well. I think just opening up the stock airbox with a K&N in there will be just as good as any aftermarket one. Give it a shot. Really easy.

The only thing I would reccomend to anyone I gues its too late for you is to buy a stock airbox seperate and do the mod on it, while leaving the other stock... this way you can go backwards easy. I job like that will actually hurt your resale quite a bit if the person buying knows what to look for

I wont have any problems with passing inspection. Thats just stupid to say. Do cars with aftermarket intakes with no airbox's pass inspection? I've done plenty of inspections in my time and that sounds silly. Don't know where you got that from. Um and my car is 2.5 weeks old, I really wasnt worried about my resale value anyways. Geese I was just trying to help you guys out here and you want to bash me. Great forum.

Chill out and welcome to the forum. I plan on doing a CAI from a 3rd party and keeping the stock system. That said I have cut holes in the air box on my motorcycles before. It works and it's free

I dunno about you but when I traded my car in their got in it, looked at the odometer and put a price on it. No inspections, anyhow if they try to use an mod'd air box as an excuse they are just trying to talk you down anyways. It's like, oh it needs brakes or tires blah blah.

I dunno what a visual inspection is? I do know in Maryland if you buy a new car it's never inspected MD only requires inspection on cars during a title transfer (sale of a used car)

Also on the SS/SC it's impossible to see and you aren't taking my car apart for an inspection.
If having a CAI failed you on inspection exactly how do would they be able to sell them? I know the off road use only trick but many of them a CARB and 49 state legal.

Ive been thinking about this mod since it was the first mod toward performance on my Sunfire BUT when I traded my Sunfire all they did was ask year, model, options, milage and gave me a price and my Sunfire was heavily modified (exterior)..

yeah vague descrip.
ok i a TX inspector
we are suppose to, by the books fail a car for not having the snorkels, heat riser tubes, old school air filter lids...etc.

as far as aftermarket intakes go, we can pass cars now with tubes even those not stamped DOT and CARB exempt

used to have to fail it, if didnt have a tag other than HKS or whatever

but if AEM or even GMtuner come out with an intake it will help the car

you'd have to remove the inner fenderwell to see anything w/ the airbox mod!!!... I have never seen anyone at the Inspection place even rev a motor high enough to be able to get the supercharger to whine!
so I personally don't think this is an issue

I inspect in PA everyday and never would think of pulling apart the fenderwell to look for that. Even a car with no filter on it passes inspection. 96+ hook it to the emissions machine and gas cap tester. Won't fail unless it has a check engine light, or the monitors are not running yet (like after a code clearing, or batt disconnect), or the gas cap is bad.

exactly!!! replace the lower portion of the airbox for the emissions test if you want to be cautious

There isn't an emmissions inspector on the planet that is going to take the time to jack the car up, pull the front tire, remove the fender skirting, and look at your airbox. They don't get paid enough to do that.

Do you install a canister type K & N replacement filter? I have the Spectre filter attached in my stock housing on my Black Balt with the XTC CAI. I just removed the botton cover. It screams pretty loud. I installed the AEM dryflow on my Tint Red Balt and put the cover back on since the bad weather is approaching. I have an AEM ordered for the Black Balt.

With the AEM Dryflow Filter you can just push the filter on and install the bottom or drill a hole to tighten the installed clamp and leave the bottom of the housing off.

The XTC CAI performs well but I wouldn't recommend it because of the price and quality.

Easy does it

Must say that is the most extensive airbox removal i have ever done. LoL But i just did the version where you leave the bottom off. .. I used one of the Spectre Air filters from Autozone for $25...I have yet to throw a code...Knock on wood but the Supercharger does scream way louder with it on. OVERALL $25 dollars, simple install vs $200-$350 and still risking a CEL...Totally worth it. No point in paying $200 bucks for a name brand tube. Thanks guys
