another one bites the dust

Just an update, i was at the track last night (Milan, MI) and got to witness first hand a fellow cobalt owner wheel hop his car into oblivion.

It was sad. I just wanted to say im sorry for the loss

It was a red non-G85 with 2.9" pulley and had an AEM sticker on the trunk.

Dont we all go through wheel hop once in our day? He was probably new.

Did he snap an axle in the process?

I believe its something with weight distribution in the engine bay and a combination of no traction. That is why you get a dampener. It takes some of the engine movement and softens it.

wheel hop is caused by the motors and trannies in our cars moving around so much because of the soft mounts

wheel hop is your engine applying force to your wheels greater than the grip of the wheel can handle.

but in the process of breaking loose, due to being a FWD car, the front end of the car lifts up with the rotational force.
that lifting causes the tires to break loose even easier, and now the front of your car is propelled upwards and the wheel is spinning quicker than it would be if it was in contact with the pavement.
now gravity brings your car back down, the tire is spinning a little to quick...and it makes contact with the pavement and grips quickly, this time propelling the front upwards even worse.....

hop....hop hop hop hop.
thats about the best i can do in lamans terms hehe
theres alot more involved...but thats basically it

yeah he only made it a few feet off the starting line.

GM is coming out with a package (if they havnt already) to address the wheel hop issue... but its basically the same stuff in the aftermarket already... stiff mounts + better axles.

Wheel hop will break axles, and sometimes can crack your bell housing, you need to learn how to launch this car and be very carefull without mounts.

If GM does come out with a kit that would be great, but I don't even want to think about how much they'll charge for it. Probably way more than aftermarket. Hopefully crateenginedepot will have a decent price since they don't mark everything up like crazy.
