Bulletin No.: 07-08-50-001

Date: January 11, 2007

TECHNICAL
Subject:
Squeak/Chirp Type Noise From Rear Split Folding Seat Back While Driving (Install Squeak Reduction Tape to Rear Seat Back Pivot Brackets)

Models:
2005-2007 Chevrolet Cobalt
2005-2006 Pontiac Pursuit (Canada Only)
2007 Pontiac G5

Condition

Some customers may comment on a squeak or chirp noise coming from the rear seat area while driving.

Cause

The cause of the noise may be caused by the rear split folding seat back pivot pins contacting the rear seat back pivot brackets.

Correction

Determine and repair the source of the noise by following the steps below:

Test drive the vehicle.

Verify the customer's noise concern.

Park the vehicle.

Open the trunk.

Pull the two rear release handles located in the center of the trunk.

Fold down the right and left rear seat back assemblies.

Continue to test drive the vehicle.

If the noise is gone, refer to Step 10.

If the noise is still present, determine the source of the noise. Refer to Squeaks and Rattles in SI.

Tip

Some models will require the use of a screwdriver to release the seat back pin from the seat back pivot retaining bracket (1).

Remove the right and left rear split seat back assemblies from the vehicle. Refer to Split Folding Seat Back Replacement in SI. Cut eight pieces of 3M(TM) Squeak Reduction Tape, P/N 06356, or equivalent, into 10 mm (0.39 in) by 30 mm (1.18 in) sizes.

Install four pieces of the tape to the right rear seat back pivot bracket:
The first piece of tape (1) is located at the twelve o'clock position.
The second piece of tape (2) is located at the four o'clock position.
The third piece of tape (3) is located at the six o'clock position.
The fourth piece of tape (4) is located at the nine o'clock position.

Repeat Step 12 for the left rear seat back pivot bracket.

Install the left and right rear seat back assemblies. Refer to Split Folding Seat Back Replacement in SI. Check and adjust the rear seat back striker to the rear seat back latch assembly for proper alignment.

Check for proper routing of the rear seat belts. Push and pull forward on the seat backs to verify the seats have locked into place. Raise the two rear split seats up into position and push backward until a click is heard.

Verify the concern has been corrected.

Anybody have a sqeaky dash? My dashboard makes all kinds of small sqeaks and chirps; nothing short of GM quality though. Kind of pisses me off @ 12000k I'm experiencing true GM craftmanship...but then again do I expect any less? Owned Chevys my whole life and never had a quiet ride.

Thanks for the TSB 07CobaltSS!!

thanks a lot...yea i mentioned it a couple times now while the car has been in for service, unfortunately the noises never seem to be apparent at the right time. i will be going in for the third time for the same stupid piece of trim (sunroof control/ trim panel) that keeps falling off!! its the minor things like that which bugs me...small little **** that you shouldn't have to worry about. nontheless i luv my SS and will continue to take care of it.

I've been hearing a squeak from the back when going over certain bumps.. I guess that's what it is.

guys, sometimes you think you hear a squeak coming from the seats, but sometimes its the rear deck.there is little metal clips that hold the deck in place, they squeak also when going over bumps.
when i did the leather mod to my rear deck,I was sure to remove these clips and place two-way foam tape instead.

when you pull the seats out (the part the flips down, you will see scratch marks or wear marks where the seat rubs. ( on the bottom hinged part... and put the strips there.
