Has anyone began running or looking into Blower cams for the SS?

well if there isn't any cams available you can have your stock cams re-ground by Crower.......i would see at least 30 hp from cams, even more once you add headers and a few supporting mods...........Cam re-grinds by Crower cost about $150.00 per cam........cam re-grinding can yield impressive gains, my car gained 28 whp from re-grinds on a NA motor...the Cobalt will do better

That's what i thought so i figured i'd ask. I'm just sorry Gm decided to go with the M62 over the M90. Could have made so much more power with pulley swap's.

Honestly dude you are very lucky to have a M-62....that blower is more then capable of running over 300 whp...I wish I had that sitting on top of my motor.....

for reference the Tiburon V-6 is cammed to make tourque, it has wide lobe separation, which really hurts the cars top end performance, stock the motor dies at 5500 rpm...but the stock cam is actualy quite suited to blown applications,

the standard philosophy is to use wide separtion on blown cars, and tight lobe separation(very little overlap) on NA cars(lots of overlap)......On my car I had my cams re-ground to be equivelant to a stage 2 NA cam, and on a dyno my car made an increase of 28 whp from adding these cams, my peak power went up 1000 rpm and get this at 7000 rpm I gained 50 whp, as on stock cams my power dropped to 140 whp, yet with the re-grinds I held 190 whp at 7000 rpm........the difference in the car is huge, likely worth .5 alone in the 1/4

Now interestingly enough some of the higher boost M-62 equiped Tiburons have added these cams to their cars, and well gains were huge as was the gain in upper RPM power....on a 12 PSI car these cams are worth over 50 whp..........now the power curve is moved a bit, you will lose a little bit of bottom end(but at this boost level they are still hitting 260 lb/ft) but your gains in top end performance is simply amazing....higher Rev limit is strongly advised to use the newfound power

also addding these cams will allow your engine to breath signifigantly better, so if your at 15 psi before cams you will be down to 9 psi after, which will allow you to run and even smaller pulley to go back to 15psi..........

the problems with cams like this is they have a rougher idle and will cause Misfire codes, and all sorts of issues.......but if you can tune your ECU to run the cams, its the best mod for the dollar you can do.................

what is the EFI sytem like on the car ? is it MAF or MAP, what does the engine ECU handle, does it do speedo as well ? there may be options to tune these cars, you may be able use a different ECU running a emulator....sort of like newer Honda's swapping in older computer sytems that are tuneable..........as almost all the GM computers are very similar and usualy use all the same sensors.....an older Typhoon ECU would control the Cobalt quite fine(specualtion) and for that ECU there is almost standalone capabilities in regards to tuning..

i seriously doubt the ss will do better than an NA car with regrinds, or any cam for that matter. 10 at most. the point of cams is to get more agressive lift. u want to opposite with forced induction. u want less lift and longer duration. that is why most FI guys dont even bother with cams, because it doesnt do much.

Alittle wrong there bro. The more duration and overlap you have. The more it will bleed off the boost.

If F/I apps don't do well with cams. Why do the EVO guys add a set and pick up 20-30 wheel horsepower? If i buy the SS i will be contacting Crower or crane to see if they can make me some custom blower cams for us.

You might want to edit this, it could be read as you stating that a tighter LSA gives less overlap as you put 'very little overlap' right after the tight LSA part. That is how I read it the first time.

Doesnt J-Body Tuning already have "Stage 1" Cams? I think they are also working on"Stage 2" Cams.

littless is waiting on his cams to ship from comp cams. So hopefully we can all see soon what kind of power they will make on the LSJ and stop all this guessing.

cams will make a hug difference if the car has the supporting mods and the ECU is tuned.....................cams do more on FI then they do NA...my exact cams made nearly double the WHP i got on a M-62 powered Tiburon.................And when you boost goes down from adding cams your not necesarily bleeding off boost, your motor is now able to swallow more air now that its cammed as well a small amount might blow thru, but if thats happening you'll see flames coming from your tailpipe.............your blower will push a constant volume of air at a set RPM, the higher the PSI the less air your motor is taking in....the lower the psi gets the more air that is now being processed by the cammed engine........this is a good thing for making HP....but I can guarantee your blower cams will not have the same efect as these cams, these cams we use are stage II NA cams, lots of overlap and a little reversion.........they signifigantly raise your peak tourque RPM and greatly increase power, tourque does suffer a little, but when your at 250 wtq you have a bit to spare...........

the common theory of blow thru with highcams on FI is somewhat unproven, as if there was that much blow thru to affect your PSI by 25%(which cams will reduce it by at minimum) that means 25% of the A/F charge is now being blown into the exhaust...if this was in fact the case then we would be shooting 10 foot flames out your tailpie.................when we add high cams to boosted Tibs we see better idle and characteristics then these same cams in a NA application........the blower pushing in air must help reduce the reversion problems asociated with raunchy cams.....as my car has a very lopey idle.......

i have a new set of cams stock coming for comp cam to profile and theni will get the new cams up and running. comp states that they are unsure if the cams they have speced out are correct or not due to the fact that they sent me the wrong cams so i am not taking any chances i will send a set of factory cams along with the blnks i have ordered as well
