Blown Cat?
Blown Cat?
I have an 06 SS/SC and I've looked around on here and ppl say they're notorious for blowing/clogging the cats. From what I've read, most of the time this leads to overboosting. Are there any other symptoms, at WOT I boost a little above 12.5psi, and down low my exhaust is a little raspy and is getting worse. Does it sound like the cat is toast?
i have the same year and model car that you have, g85 package. you'll know when your cat is shot. it will sound completely horrible. like a swarm of bees are in your cat, only when under acceleration. when my stock cat went in my car you could only notice it when your under acceleration. when i was at idle or coasting(off the gas) the noise went away. it sounded pretty bad, i almost thought my supercharger was fucked, but i scratched that idea since i was still boostin 12.5psi. took it to the stealership, it was covered under the powertain warranty, ran better then when i orriginally bought it (used). sometimes if im flyin on the highways it seems i can pull an extra .5 - 1.5psi of boost.
Yea that sounds familiar.... under acceleration, now that I think about it, all through out the powerband, it sounds like straight rice......
If I buy a catted dp from like zzp or somewhere like that, it would fix it right? The only thing I'm afraid of is I don't want the car to be obnociously (sp) loud...its my dd so I want it to remain streetable but still be able to open up when I feel like it.
Advice?

Advice?
i took mine to the dealership and they replaced it for free. ran them around 600-800. i forget. after labor n all. i spent absolutely nothing. now if i didnt have the choice to have it replaced for free i wouldve bought a ZZP DP with their magnaflow cats. i wouldnt worry too much about it bein loud. the cat back system will prolly go next dependin on your miles i guess. im at 51k. after they replaced my cat it sounded alot better and the rpms didnt drop as fast. my cat back stock system is about shot. its startin to pop and get some back fire when i run the rpms high n shift lol. sounds pretty cool but im startin to get some rattles. i plan on buying ZZP long tubes header/dp with a magnaflow cat, and matchin it up with a magnaflow catback. you cant beat the sound quality of magnaflow and its not too expensive. but if you decided to replace your downpipe/cat with a ZZP/magnaflow cat it will fix your problem and also make it sound alot better. get some hp out of it. and they arent priced too bad. definetly cheaper then the stock replacement downpipe. i think they go for around 180-200 from ZZP
if you cat is getting clogged im postive the exhaust would get more quiet as the damage progress's. if its getting raspy or u hear like a tapping sound u might of cracked ur flex pipe... if this isnt it than bump for op
GM extended Cat coverage so odds are your's could be warrantied if it's on the way out .
