How would the blower be spinning faster? Belt still moves the same speed regardless.

thats why i said may or may not. some of you are saying it makes a difference some of you are saying its a waste of time. instead of arguing i would personally like to find out for myself. i just dont want to mess up anything else on the car.

Ever try to spin a dyno drum by hand? You have to work a hell of a lot harder to make 1 hp than it takes to spin the ac.

if you go the gutting your compressor and use it as an idler pulley route, it will not mess anything up no. if anything it will only ruin the compressor as long as your properly bleed out the system and seal up the lines and condenser when taking it all off.

and i have a spare compressor if need be.

when its already moving, or from a stand still. cause if you ever noticed.....they don't do dyno's from a stop. and a drum weight/rotating mass is factored in to a properly calibrated and upkept dyno....

nobody here is saying you make like 10hp off the a/c delete, but parasitic loss is parasitic loss no matter how small or large it may be.. its still easier to turn the belts without the compressor there, so if that "power loss" is worth it to the OP then let him remove it. its not really worth arguing about..

You cant even do a dynojet the way I mean. I was referring to a real dyno anyways, one thats load varying (ala mustang, dynapack, etc) Since those can actually measure from a stop. I managed to make 5 hp running.

And a tenth or two of a HP arent even noticeable unless you're driving an RC car or gocart.

Thats just bull. I bet the difference between running no accessories at all and stock is less than a hp gain and would get lost in the wash on the dyno.

well thats what separates the winning cars from the losing cars.. 1hp here, another there, and pretty soon you have something noticeably different.... its not too difficult of a concept to grasp.

apparently for him it is, since he's coming in a thread where people are interested in an ac delete and doing nothing but bashing the idea.

would it be easier to have the system drained instead of having to plug everything?

leafy you ever wonder why bracket/door cars that previously came with ac, are now raced without them??? because its extra weight and extra rotating mass that is no longer needed and only hinders power. same reason 90% of drag cars don't run an alternator. there wouldn't be a market for bumper battery hook ups to charge the battery if there wasn't a gain from running the car without the alternator.

yea... on a bit of a side note, yet still on topic

im going to be pretty interested to see how our campus's project car is going to take to lightening everything up on it. its a 96 saturn sl2 1.9L, i just bought all the parts for the rebuild today. we will be running an a/c delete and all lightweight pullies.. we are shooting for MPGs first, power then after so we need as little drag on everything as possible

it will need to be drained regardless. plugs are just to keep it all clean once its off the car

OP/farrall. if you want to do a simple one. just gut the compressor and remove all the other parts of the system, leaving the pulley from the compressor as the only piece left.

will look like this.

personally, i took being turbo to my advantage and went all out with it. factory water pump delete, ac delete, balance shaft delete. and i switched over to an electric water pump. the weight savings just from the a/c pump and condenser is 25lbs. 10.6 from the pump and 14.4 from the condenser.

along with getting rid of those, it also got rid of all the a/c and heater hose lines on the car. i no longer have the factory water pump in place, giant coolant line behind the engine, thermostat housing, or oil cooling unit. i didn't weigh any of those things but i would imagine the weight savings from all that is atleast 50lbs. i also have a turndown to run at the track when i take my catback off, which weighs 25.8lbs. along with removing the front bumper support, which weighs 10.4lbs, to accommodate my intercooler.

theres ATLEAST over 85lbs right there. plus taking off the load on the chain from the water pump and balance shafts. then the load on the belt from the ac compressor. my car can hit 8k rpms unbelievably fast.

I'm not saying its not worth it, its a great weight savings, but you're not gaining any power.

Certainly skip the light weight pullies on that car, SPS ran the test on that car back in the day the difference between running with a belt and with no belt at all on the dyno was ~0.5hp. There's nothing to be gained there. But you should see if the evil plastic web site is still up which does outline how to take over 400 pounds of of the car.
