Calling all tuners..crash course needed

So I have been trying to find some info on how exactly a car's ecm is manipulated and had a few questions...not trying to get any free industry secrets...just looking for info.

1. When an ECM/PCM is sent in for an exchange...does that company burn and install a new EPROM chip? Or is a bin file (i think thats what they are called) uploaded into it with some sort of pass through programmer? With the new computer systems out there, I'm guessing a reflash is a program that is uploaded to the unit instead of the old prom chips that are physically installed into the unit.

2. When someone advertises that they will come to you and tune your car, what tools are they using? An OBD II scan tool for data logging?? and when they tweak the tune, are they reburning a chip for installation back into the PCM or are they somehow uploading a new file into the system.

Books...websites...directions...guides...info...wo uld all be greatly appreciated. Just trying to understand how this all works, and how "tuners" know what to look for when tweaking the information that the inputs send to the outputs.

If you do enough searching, you will find that that book is pretty much accepted as the defacto beginners handbook for tuning.

Aside from that, get in the habit of searching the HP Tuners forums whenever you have something on your mind you can't figure out or want to learn more about. Chances are its been covered.

1. Your right, a new file is downloaded to the ECM with the changed parameters.

2. I use HPTuners for my car. It has the OBD II interface which downloads a file to my laptop. This file can be manipulated by HPTuners. Your able to see different tables and have the ability to change said tables. Once the changes are made the interface is used again to overwrite the exisiting file with the new file.

If your near the Cedar Rapids area I can show you how that works....
