Cams?

Sup everyone, i'm new to this forum and trying to make up my mind on a 03-04 evo or a brand new ss/sc. My question is I noticed on the forums that not may ss/sc owners have install cams for hp while evos forums talk about puting in cams in as a 4th mod (and tune).

Actually, JBP has cams out for the Cobalt SS/SC, if you do a little searching there is a couple threads about a deal they just had. I myself am one of the guys involved with the cam deal, just waiting for mine to come in. My buddy, DTM2188, and I are picking up his ride tom. from getting his installed. EDUB is another feller on here that just had em installed and he has some pretty good comments about em.

No dyno results as of yet, but they claim about 15hp un-tuned and about 25hp tuned. Should get to see some numbers by at least the 25th of this month from EDUB, he has less mods then DTM2188 whom should have gotten his tuned during the install. Should see some numbers on his ride tom. Those should be pretty damn impressive. We're hoping for in the low 300 range.

No doubt...DTM should have some numbers tom. hopefully, but his will be including a bunch of other mods. Edubs numbers should get posted around the 26th after the dyno day we got going on out here. I will post up some digits as soon as I get the cams and all, but I have to wait in line. lol.. Growing quite impatient, damn excited actually.

Back on Topic...Welcome, by the way. May have been a bit easier if you had posted in the New Comers type area so people would say what's up. Good luck with the decision though. Them Evos are nice, but I LOVE my Cobey. (Slightly biased also. lol)

If you had been on here a bit longer you would have had a little more time to see how much the after-market has already grown for our cars. This is just the beggining, people are still testing the waters as to how far we can push the motors and all. Two turbo projects, twin-screw project, twin-charge project, and these are just a couple of the bigger projects going on for the SS/SC. There's more and more stuff coming out everyday for our cars, and I LOVE IT...Keeps me from getting bored with my ride.

The 4g63 in the evo has terrific aftermarket support, not to mention HKS 272 cams, which I would give anything for to have something similar in a Cobalt. Nobody makes LSJ compatible cams as of right now, a few companies will regrind stock ones for you though. L61 (2.2L) aftermarket cams are available through GM performance shops and from Comp cams.

Like I had mentioned, JBP has done a re-grind cam deal. Should be some good gains. This is just the start though. I think Comp Cams maybe working on something also, could be mistaken. There's no doubt that the EVO has the aftermarket over the Cobalt, but that's some of the excitement to it. Wondering what will be coming out next as well as the possibility to throw out some ideas of your own to some companies. That and being the test mule for new parts, which in turn means FREE STUFF..lol

Comp shows no interest outside of L61 support, I've been dealing with them for the past couple of weeks and they refuse to even try to grind me cams using two of their intake blanks. I'm trying to see what Crower's position is on a set of custom cams from LSJ blanks. They did offer to regrind my stock ones for 165 bucks though.

That's not a bad deal...Yeah, I have noticed that sometimes you need an actual company to get another company to come up with a new product. I tried talking to Wings West about some products for us and they never replied. Then this dude, Mysterious1 or something, comes along and he says that they may do something for us..Companies are funny like that I guess.

I don't know why people say there are no dyno numbers for these cams.
here is my chart:

if your stock you'll need to do the boost-by-pass mod so the by-pass doesn't blead all your boost like it did on my dyno. (didn't remember the mod when I was on the dyno)

but if you get it tuned, you'll get major gains.

I've been driving with these prototype cams for 14 months going strong.

I would recommend getting valve springs if you got a 7K + RPM limit ( just to be safe )

JBP has offered to grind these cams from steel cores. I got stock cams reground because of the cost. If all goes well, I will have my cams dyno'ed on the 24th at TTP with my setup. It will be GMS2 belt, 2.79" ring, NGK BKR7E's, CAI, JBP Cams and Valve Springs. I've got a thread up with video of my cams on the road already. I'm pretty happy with how the car feels, but there's no way I can tell you what my gains will be. The only thing we can do is compare my dyno to someone else with the same mods and no cams that TTP tuned. I don't know if they have tuned someone with a CAI and 2.79" ring, though...

Anywho, here's the link:

My car is as fast as an Evo, handels as good and was cheaper. But, in the end, I think an Evo is still the better car.

They had a big group buy. It's there version of the GM stage 3. Its 60# with 2.79 and custom tune, pretty much what you are going to be intalling.
