Controlling timing

I dont know if this is a newb question or not but can a obd2 scan gauge be used to advance retard timing? I know to actually program timing for different rpm ranges or amounts of boost you need to use hptuners, but can you just advance or retard your timing over the whole range with just the scan gauge? A guy at my work was saying he used to use one for that and I just wasnt sure if that was true or not.

Maybe something like a Superchips tuner, if it is designed for the car, can allow that, but I highly doubt any scanner can edit the PCM like that.

yeah, but there must be some kind of way to edit that in a simple way beacuse isnt there a switch on the meth kits from aem and from snow that retards your timing if you run out of meth? I mean the aem meth kit I saw as cheap as 390 compared to 330 for the devil's own, and the aem one included the meth tank that the devil's own didnt and had that safety feature on it too. If it was that hard for them to control timing it wouldnt be just an extra $60 for it.

I don't believe so, with just a obd2 scan all it does is scan! you can't change anything

I don't believe there are any scanning tools that allow you to actually change things. They just read, and clear codes basically. Thats what scanning does. Now when you get into tuning, like HPTUNERS, is where you can change everything you could ever imagine.

Here is my question though. If you advance the timing because you are running methanol, and for whatever reason you run out of meth, what happens? Would you have excessive knock during boost, or what? Would you just have to stay out of boost until you can find more windshield wiper fluid?

Also, another thing to touch on. If you have windshield wiper fluid and you add heat, it really does help. I have the aem meth kit, with a 1 gallon trunk mounted container. I filled it up with -20f windshield wiper fluid, just water and methanol, no glycol. However when I decided to add a full bottle of heat to my 1 gallon mix, I actually saw my temps decrease more under harder acceleration.

I actually recently did some logs, and will be making a post about some things to answer questions about temps etc. Monday my heat exchanger is being installed and i am really hoping that drops my iat2s down.

doesnt the aem kit retard your timing when it runs out of meth? Thats what the aem website says their controller in the kit will do.
