Crank Pulley

Ok well im not too familiar with this area but numerous cobalt guys have told me the problem....The Crank shaft pulley or w/e technical name it is "The biggest pulley on the bottom" well anyway when the car first cranks it has a bad squeal that last for about 5 mins but its taking longer for the squeal to go away and it quickens the higher the rpm. At first I thought it was the belt wearing out so I got belt dressing to see if that was it but after i applied it the noise got extremely loud but went back to where it was the next day. I had someone look under the hood when I turned the car over and they noticed the crank pulley wobbled so we found our problem. My question is what all do I need to replace and how hard is it? Thanks for the help

Ok, be extremely careful with this. The crank pulley is held on by a bolt that can only be used once. If it has been taken off once it should be thrown away. If it was put back on then thats why you are having the issues. Because it is loosening itself off. If you let it continue it will snap the key that holds the pulley to the crank, your battery will die and oil will start falling out of the motor and your world will suck. It happened to me after the DEALERSHIP had my motor rebuilt because of warrenty. So I have Fred Simmons Jr. @ SMG Motoring rebuilding it right now. After the key snapped it fucked up the crank shaft and pulley. So buy the new pulley bolt and have someone who knows what they are doing inspect it and replace it. I sued the dealership and won but it still sucks not having your car for a year.

Meh I just reused mine after the head swap, 17 psi and 7500 rpms *shrugs*, but I agree torque to yield applications she always be replaces, a five dollar bolt could save you a $1000 headache

It is normal for the crank pulley to have a little bit of wobble at idle. The crank pulley or harmonic balancers is there to dampen engine vibrations. It has two parts that are separated by rubber. The rubber causes the pulley to wobble at low rpms. When you rev motor the cyntriphical force centers the pulley. Have some one rev the motor to like 2000-3000 rpms, and check if it still wobbles. You can also look at the rubber between the two halves of the balancer. Look and see if its cracking. As for belt dressing it only makes things worse. You should buy a new belt. Clean all your pulleys with brake clean. Then rinse the pulleys off with a hose and let them dry.

yeah it would be nice if its just the belt.....thanks for the other input guys.
Matt-lol Its not like I listen and ignore you, you and kevin are probably the only guys in NC that I listen to and Gary. You only said fix it when I said the pulley wobbled, originally you said it was a belt. Im going to try and take it to a shop tomorrow or Saturday once this rain stops. over 19 inches within 3 days lol. The cars been in the parking lot for a few days now.
