Dyno advise please
Dyno advise please
I have a couple questions as I had my stock 2005 SS SC dynoed last week on a Mustang Dyno & it all went good but the guy had a problem getting the RPms to read right in 4th gear under full power as we ran it 5 times & the rpms were fine all the way to 4th & & when I floored the gas it cut the RPM in half on the dyno & my tach was reading fine & the HP read fine but the RPM were showing 3000 instead of 6000
We connected to #1 coil pack for the read so if any one has any advise there it would be great. Jim the guy who owns the Dyno said he can get a better reading from the injectors by connecting to one of the injector wires rather than the coil pack as I just got off the phone with him so I guess I was wondering if anyone else has had to do that to get a good RPM reading ??

Now for the other questions as this was the first time I have ever run a car on a Dyno
1. I noticed some people ran only up to 3rd gear so I want to know why & what gear do you usually go to as I know 5th is overdrive.
2.I ran to 6000 RPM & I noticed people posting to hit the shut off so I should have ran to 6500? Now with the stage 2 kit I want to hit 7000 right
3. My base Dyno I had my all season tires on & after the fact I was thinking they were not rated to hit 130MPH & I did so this time with the stage 2 kit I will have the stock 18s on so was my base dyno maybe a tad off?
4. Don't I want the engine temp about norm as far as heat & then is it safe to run 4 or 5 time or do I want to let the temp cool down inbetween runs ? It never really got hot but I was watching the temp.
5. The guy had me apply the e break & will that mess with the performance of the test as far as the car reading it's on & altering the RPMs or anything like that???
Is there anything else I need to do as I wanted to get the Base & I did & now I want to get the HP increase with the rest of my mods so I'll get a Dyno with the stage 2 & then I will install a cold air system & do it again & then I want exhaust but that will be 6 months or so but I'll dyno it again so I can see the gains with each addon

I am not too sure about where the best place to get a good reading on the RPM's is however the other questions I may be able to help with
1. you do your run up to redline in which ever gear is closest to a 1:1 ratio, in most 5-spd tranny's this is 4th gear.
2.always run it right to fuel shut off to get the most accurate reading at the top ogf the power band, if you ease off the throttle at all when approaching peak RPM, your peak power number are going to be affected accordingly.
3.Tires will only have an affect if the weight is higher/lower than the stock wheel and tires, the rubber compound may also have a slight affect on the traction with the rollers, but I would have to assume that this would be insignificant.
4.Engine should be at normal operating temp. Although you still want to attepmt to get the coldest charge of air possible. So try to keep the blower cool(ice bag between runs, just ione idea, seems to work at the strip)
5. E-brake should not affect RPM readings, or performance. The only electrical connection to your e-brake is the the causes the light come on on your cluster. Do you feel less power when you do a smoke show with the e-breake on?
Anyway I hope that helps a little. Maybe someone else will know about best connection for accurate RPM readings.
