Engine noise!?

Why does my car sound like there is stuff rattling around in the head? It's not obnoxious but the noise is noticable almost like a deisel engine? I have stage II with a 2.9. What causes this noise?

Probably a chain tensioner going bad.

Or, try this:
Pull the big allen plug from the front of the head. I had the top bolt for the fixed chain guide back out, made a nasty noise like that.

what year is your car? if its mid 06 and early 07 and comes from passenger engine compartment...most likely timing chain tensioner. if it rattles at idle then goes away when u rev up, then comes back again- timing chain tensioner. get it fixed before it gets worse. crate engine depot has them for 50 bucks or so. GM had the wrong part randomly put on the assembly line during those years which is why it is failing
hope this helps

get the new tensioner before the chain stretches out and youl have to most likely get the whole assemble replaced.... iu tried bringing it in for warranty work but it would never make the sound for the dealer. also go to autozone and get RESTORE oil additive in the meantime- it works like a charm

That could make sense since I've noticed it shortly after putting the 2.9 on. Could it be that it just needs to be adjusted? And if so would I be tightening or loosening it?

I got nothing, I sold that head

The big plug on the front of the head, right by the upper motor mount. 10mm allen key. Take it out, the bolt is right behind it. Try it and see, just a suggestion.

Has nothing to do with the pulley, its the cam drive chain, inside the motor.

The tensioner is a large nut on the back of the head, like 30mm or something.

Yes, its hydraulic based, it will maintain constant tension unless it goes bad (which makes that nasty rattle sound)

thats what i thought- its powerde by oil pressure? which is why restore may be an effective oil additive lubricant

Yeah, its in the 40's down here already

Yeah, it has a spring to hold base tension, but oil pressure increases the tension, so it can keep up with higher RPM demands. Some of them lose the seal internally and collapse, or get stuck and can't increase tension. Then you get the rattle we all love so much.

fak! I wonder how long it would take and if they have to disassemble a lot to fix this if it is an issue.

about 2 hours of work. they have to take off the valve cover, hold the cams, and change the tensioner- i believe that is it ( correct me if im wrong) it would be less of a headache to pay th 100 bucks and have a shop do it dealdership mechanics can be hard headed bastards

Nope, its a really simple procedure. I could do it in about 10 minutes, you can get to it without opening up the motor at all really. You do have to take off the valve cover to release the set on the tensioner, but thats the harderst part.
