My advice is have it checked. My prob turned out to have done a lot of damage. Lucky for me it was under warranty.

most likely chain tensioner/chain ...mine was exactly how u described and i finally got them to put in a new assembly and it sounds great now

No prob. This seems to be like a common problem and anyone with this noise should be aware.

just as a heads up to all, I took my car into the dealership wednesday morning to get it checked out. Within an hour they diagnosed, and fixed the problem. It was the tensioner.... Thanks for the help guys.

Thats right prognosis was Timing chain tensioner binding. Why they didn't admit it over the phone I dunno. I think maybe they weren't ruling anything else out before. They ended up having to replace the camshafts, lifters, and rockers tho and of course the tensioner. Hundreds of dollars worth of parts all cus they scimped out on the assembly on a little bolt. At least this was all under warranty.

Ya it was the tensioner, it just caused more of a chain reaction in the head then most others have got.

Anyone have a link to the TSB to print out? I have an 06, and I would like to get this fixed before it comes up at all.

I also would like a link to this TSB. I had a tech listen to it and he told me it was normal, immediately I said what happens if it get worse, let alone my engine goes ka-boom!! I mentioned everyone here complaining about this and stressed how serious it was. Mine does this knocking now on a regular basis once the engine is warmed up and after the idle dies down.

If it means anything my 06 has near 32k and I started hearing the noise around 28-29k.

Even though I'm out of 3/36 factory warranty (don't know if this is covered under powertrain warranty) I bought mine certified used and am taking back to dealer I bought it from, have them listen to it and get a 2nd opinion, or may go to another Chevy dealer.

My build date is 10/05, so I dont think mine is affected. I found the TSB in the General Cobalt section..
