Mufflers MUFFLE the sound. IE quieter.

Resonators, resonate the sound. generally they make a car sound less like bumblebees.

 

We have a winner folks! The difference in construction I guess is what I'm after. And whether one is more restrictive than the other given equal size ins and outs?

 

my understanding is that a resonator basically isnt restrictive as long as the inlet/outlet isnt smaller than your exhaust.

basically its just a pipe that has been engineered by its length/shape to create a resonance in the sound of the air moving through it to change the tone of the exhaust note.

Mufflers are dependant on who makes it.
generally stock mufflers from the factory have a certain amount of restriction.
because they care more about emissions and sound levels than performance.
