first mod to SS/SC

hey guys, just got my SS, love it, but.......

after reading, hearing and watching some videos, my SC sounds weak.
I want to put an intake on it. now, im sure this has been asked numorious times, so Im sorry for the repost, Ive searched a bit, but I cant come up with the results and flat out answers I want.

In short, I want my SC to howl, louder the better ( love that sound )
but, I do not want any CEL's !

what intake or mod can I do ?

Ive read that K&N makes a stupendous sound, but throws CEL's all over the place.
read the AEM makes a good noise ( slightly louder then stock) with no CEL's
and finally, I read something about an air box mod, which I really didnt understand fully, giving you more whine then in stock trim.

Ideas and advice would be great, Im new to the Cobalt scene to keep it simple for me

Thanks

My injen did not give me a cel, just make sure you clean the intake tube on the inside with a dry towel to get all the dirt out and wipe all the excess oil off the filter and youll be fine.

does the K&N unit void warrenty ?
will the commen CEL with that kit make my car "act up" so to speak, give it any problems ?

I have the K&N CAI and it is great, like you said before great sound. I did get CEL's often, but after I got my GM Stage 2 with the reflash, I have yet to have one. As for the warranty issue, when I had my car in at the dealership when I got the initial CEL, they told me that it was due to my CAI and that they cleared the code without any issues. Great product.

I would definately reccomend the AEM, such a great product. I was looking around for one for awhile, and after reading Denny's "Time to Breathe" post my mind was made up. Its easy to install, to me it sounds alot louder than stock, proven HP and TQ increase, and best of all no CEL's

I got the AEM cai. I like it. I was in my Jeep one night with the top off, I was following my husband, he was driving the Cobalt. Well he feels to need to drive the car like a speed demon (I baby the car). The car sounded great. I could really hear everything considering the roof on my Jeep was not on. I did not get a cel either. He installed it, took him about an hour due to the fact that he had to remove the wheel & the plastic thinggy in the wheel well. I am happy with what he picked out. OMG does my car sound sooo good. I have not heard any others in person though. Heard a few others on videos, but I am sure there is a certain amount of distortion there.

i have an injen. SCREAMS (like any CAI on this car) and scares the hell outta ppl.

no cel's .... 3,000 miles on the car since the Injen CAI

as for warranty; that depends on the dealer. they can void your warranty if the mod caused damage to the engine. obviously this can get very complicated. ANY cai can void ur warranty, so dont dedicate yourself to one brand based on warranty.

I have the K&N Typhoon. No CEL ever! I took the powder coat off and polished it, also smoothed the welds. It is very loud! I hit some tunnels with the radio off, windows closed and the sunroof open, and I was very pleased! I hit the beginning of the tunnel @ 60mph in 3rd and nailed it. The tunnel was only about 1/4 mile long. By the end of the tunnel I was in the middle of 4th doing over 120mph. Man, what a rush! That thing is F'n loud from 3k rpm to redline. From what I understand, K&N is the only 1 piece intake tube. XTC is the only 3" from start to end, but it's expensive. I don't know for sure on the previous statements, correct me if I'm wrong please.

have tried K&N
have heard injen secondhand
have tried (and will keep) AEM dropin filter with airbox mod

If you want no CEL and you want something that "in my experience" is basically as loud as everything else, maybe slightly less than injen....save your money and buy a $40 AEM dropin dryflow.

Pros: screams like a banshee
Proven lack of CEL
10 minutes and you can be back to stock for warantee trips
car looks stock unless you really look
did i mention this mod costs $40??

Cons: not quite as loud as injen, but only very slightly.
depending on what you like, you dont get a big shiny pipe under your hood

I have an injen CAI with no cel. I would go with the injen or aem. But the aem seems like you paying alot for so little. So my vote Injen

i have the AEM and im very happy with it.....started off right after the install driving lightly letting the pcm adjust to more air flowing past the MAF....best of all...no cel's....and after putting 5,000 miles on the intake the supercharger absoloutely screams still without a single cel....it keeps getting louder and louder every thousand miles....can't wait for the 2.5, 60 lbers and hp tuners tune....shooting for a 300 horsepower mean machine....

^... 300 hp... good luck

basically you wont be unhappy with any intake you choose to get. it's basically a brand preference. i love K&N products, but im moving away from the oild filters......
