Question Gas Usage

ok so I have a 2005 cobalt ss/sc and since the gas prices are rising once again i was wondering about the type of fuel you use. i know it says to use premium but what are the consequences if you use regular (87 octane) or regular plus (89 octane)????

your motor will detonate and throw out a rod.

no jk... but seriously the difference is only 2 or 3 dollars when filling up. dont risk damage to the motor.

No, you will ruined your engine and it will not run right. You will damage your engine. Just stay on premium fuel, just don't use your car as much. If you are using your car as a daily driver then you should had thought about it before you buy this car. Instead of complaining about the gas price for that car. I have the same car like you do and I knew the gas will go up. No complains at all, just drive right. You will be fine if you drive hard then you putting out your money for gas. It's your money for what you are paying.

If your stock then regular gas is fine. But like 07lsj posted, it's only a few dollars difference.

Here, this is straight from the manual.

If your vehicle has the 2.4L L4 engine (VIN Code B) or the 2.0L Supercharged engine (VIN Code P), use premium unleaded gasoline with a posted octane rating of 91 or higher. You may also use regular unleaded gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher, but your vehicle’s acceleration may be slightly reduced, and you may notice a slight audible knocking noise, commonly referred to as spark knock.
If the octane is less than 87, you may notice a heavy knocking noise when you drive. If this occurs, use a gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher as soon as possible. Otherwise, you might damage your engine. If you are using gasoline rated at 87 octane or higher and you hear heavy knocking, your engine needs service.

I'm always for higher octane, I haven't been belowe 100 oct in the cobalt for over a year now. But I'm just showing him that it is perfectly fine to run 87 as well. I ran 87 for the first year of having the car with maybe some 93 every month or so.
