My question is, why does it cost so much more if your only getting a pulley in addition to stage 1?

If they is the case then I am buying stage one and a pulley from somwhere else.

Info from GM about stage 2+

I emailed a guy that works for gm's public relations asking about the stage 2+ and what was in it, he doesn't say much but atleast it's better than the usual "contact your local gm parts dealership" response. i won't post my email and his name was removed(it is nice to see that there are actual plans to go beyond stage 2 and not just rumors)

Sorry for the delayed response.

That's good news about the props from the younger set re: the Cobalt. The
Stage Kits went on sale last week and have been selling very well, so the
popularity of the Cobalt SS Supercharged is definitely rising.

Stage 2+ is simply our designation for developmental programs and testing
that go beyond Stage 2. We are always looking at ways to improve the
performance of our engines, which is why we have some of the most powerful,
consistent and reliable engines and engine upgrades on the market. Also,
if you're referring to the Time Attack Cobalt and Bonneville race cars when
you write "project cars," those were built by GM Performance Division, not
GMPP.

Cheryl McCarron should be able to answer your other questions.

Thanks.

and btw, cheryl mccarron doens't work with the cobalts, the guy directed me to her for circle track crate motors... so it won't do any good to track her down and ask about the cobalt.

Precisely my thinking. If there is definately only one flash, why not get your own pulley to get to stage 2?

I wonder what they have planned beyond the "Stage 2" deal... Probably won't know for another year I would assume, since they are clearly testing the waters now.

Greg

Good info, BTW

You're getting a pulley "hub" system PLUS a belt. If you buy the pulley somewhere else then you have to get a pulley tensioner as well. Pulleys at Billetflow for example cost $159.95 for the first pulley and then $70 for the tensioner. For the price I'd rather do with the GM pulley.

And BTW, we're getting absolutely hosed on the price vs. our American neighbours to the south. I'll be getting my kit from a US dealer @ $750 (no GST/PST either). The total price in will be approx. $900.

You do not need a tensioner with a 3" pulley. The stock one works just fine. The stock belt works as well.

If the reflashes are the same there is no way in hell that someone can convince me that the Stage 2 kit is realistic to buy. Stage 1 with a different pulley is a good deal.

Could be some handling mods. Maybe brakes, or something similar to the SRT-4 ACR. Although he did say engine mods, that may mean exhaust or intake.

the reflash is different, i am pretty sure of that, cause that stage 1 - upgrade to stage 2 part number says you need a new reflash to get to stage 2, so i put two and two together, and that means different flash for stage 2

that's what i was thinking. they're supposed to be releasing the gm intakes by the end of spring, maybe it's an intake and smaller pully or something. it would be nice if it was an intake along with the header they uses on the 272 cobalt

so the consensus is that what you should get stage 2 or buy 1 and get a 2.8 pully?

I would say stage 2 and if you want to add a 2.8 to that. It makes no sense for the reflashes to be the same between stages 1 and 2. The stage 1 reflash will not change the fact that the car (w/o the boost bypass mod of course) will bleed any boost back to 12.5, it has no reason too since GM thinks you are still on the stock pulley.

I would like to see the actual directions where people are getting that there is only one reflash for both kits. The only way to tell is to get a copy of the stage 1-->2 directions and see if they say there is a reflash. From just reading the stage 2 install directions there isn't going to be 2 flashes, they are going to be tied into to one final flash (the same thing that is most likely involved in the stage 1--> 2 upgrade.

The best bang for the buck will probably be to buy your own injectors and the stage 1--> 2 kit in all honesty.

Thankfully not. The last thing the SS needs is more badging, lol.

Not likely since the clutch seems to hold out fine if you don't launch your car. And being as GM will consider that abusive driving people are going to be out of luck if they end up screwing up the transmission from stronger clutches that can handle launching.
