Got Dynoed!!!

i had a car show yesterday and when i got there i quickly found out that the guys from Modern Muscle Motorsports where there with their dynojet. i went over to them and asked if they could do a Cobalt SS they said sure so a couple of hours into the show i pulled my car out and put it on the dyno. it was pretty nerve racking getting my car up on the dyno but once it was on it was freaking sweet. i ended up drawing a crowd and i even got videoed for a local tv station. i did three pulls in 4th gear at 2500rpm and my best numbers were 225hp/191tq. the whp number is more than i expected and unfortunately the wtq number is lower than what i expected. but all in all i had a great time.

That shouldn't matter; at least, when I got dyno'd, I did both 3rd AND 4th gear pulls and the difference was only 2 whp and 4lbs tq.

yea i thought it was kind of weird to do the pulls in 4th. but the guy showed me a list of all the cobalts they've done, he said he knows Matt at Tune Time, which i thought was pretty cool considering i've heard good things about Matt.

Not really; some guys are doing 225whp stock!

BUT - My tuner told me that since these cars run very rich (especially 4th gear WOT) on the stock tune, that doing power pulls in 4th gear is a bad idea. I have the dyno numbers to prove it... off the map below 10 AFR for 4th gear. Plus he made a good point - do you plan on doing a 4th gear pull on the 1/4 mile? Didn't think so... in which case those numbers matter.... why?

that depends. over at tune time, matt says stock #'s are 195-202whp... totally depends on the dyno.

stage 2 did 232 saturday over there..

Good numbers man. You might have dynoed only 210 stock so you never know. All dyno's are different.

so do you guys think it is possible that i might put more power down if i were to do the pulls in 3rd? also i'm going to try and get the header/downpipe combo i want buy early september....will that make a huge difference in the torque number? i think that'll put me up there with stage 2 cobalts.

the pulls in 3rd should help.

the header/dp will lower your torque... but raise hp..

Pulls are usually done in 4th which is 1:1 ratio.

dyno #'s differ dyno to dyno and day to day on same dyno. I remember a buddy took his car to 3 different dyno jets and 1 mustang 30 minutes apart between each pull and recorded pulls that varied over 32 hp and a Mustang dyno was higher than 1 of the dynojet pulls.

out of all my dynos 3rd and fforht had a 1-2 hp diffrence all the time at three differnt dynos so since i run lean as hell i stick to 3rd gear pulls for the most part cause im not in a lean spot as long on a 3rd gear pull compared to a 4th. also since i started getting more whp my car hates going past 140 anymore cause theres simply not enough fuel to support a pull up there any more.....

4th gear is too long and drawn out. creates way to much heat from the blower.

So I should tell my dyno operator to make the pulls in 3rd gear then until i start making my own on the street? The whole pull is over in 20 seconds so I didnt think that would make a whole lot of difference, but the heat obviously builds fast. Soon as my software gets here I will be making all our pulls on the street and can make full ones in 3rd or 4th gear.

you guys need to realize that every dyno is different , i mean i would put money down that if you got dynoed in south chicago, and then drove to north chicago and dynoed the numbers would be different

dont put to much emphasis on dynos, they really dont mean **** unless you are tuning right then. i dynod 220whp, 220wtq or something like that earlier this summer. pretty sure my 105 traps in 90 degree, 80% humidiity on dr's in the quarter equate to more than 220 hp

i used third gear to tune in. top out at 112 mph, the ticket will be a lot less than 140+.

the blower just generates way too much heat to do a 4th gear run, in my little opinion

I'm listening to a lot of your little opinions!

140+ around here is common place on several 4+ mile stretches of interstate with no cross traffic, entrances or exits of public traffic to tend with and no one in my 2 lanes for miles when I do it. I do speed runs alot faster than that in my Z06 frequently.

ok your 3rd gear tops out at 112, i guess that is due to the tune? because right now i'm topping 3rd at around 96. (damn i sound like a noob)

the next time i dyno my car i will have my header/downpipe combo on it and i'll be sure to do the pulls in 3rd.

makes me all warm and fuzzy inside. so once i get a tune i'll be seeing my rev limit go higher, thats cool. i'm going to get the CA stage 4 kit this fall, but before that i want to get my car prepared for that and get it as fast as possible before it. i'm hoping mid 13s before the kit. so i'll be getting dr's, axles, tranny work & nitrous....before the stage 4 kit.
