The reason they "Break" is from the brushes wearing out, by replacing the brushes it should work fine again. What they really needed to do is have a brushless motor in their. It would be much more effiecent and last way longer.

How does people hitting it make it start working again? like what does it do to the brushes?

I'm not sure if your familiar with how a brushed motor works, but if your not just google brushed motor diagram and you'll see if this doesn't make sense.

Where the brushes contact is against a rotating shaft and they slowly get worn down, there are springs pressing the brushes against it. Eventually the powder begins to build up inside of it from the brushes being worn excessivly and or/the brushes get worn the the point they can't sufficiently do their job. Hitting it with a hammer will knock the powder around allowing electrical contact again/get the brushes pushed against the motor shaft again/whatever particular problem is happing in that specific one.

However that is a temp fix usually and will fail again. They are rebuildable though. brushes are cheap and I beleive there is even a How To on the forums.
