so why is the valve for the wastegate welded shut? do you plan on using an external gate and is your turbo manifold prepped for it?

The valve for the wastegate is inside the housing.Im not sure why the peice is welded shut.Even if it was not welded shut,it has 3 bolts that hold the flange on.Theres no way it would seal properly with 3 bolts,so i guess its closed for a reason.Maybe the turbo experts can chime in,cause im far from one, lol.

This is the exhaust flange im gonna need.

those turbo's are set up internally gated. if you weld it shut like that it's to run an external gate. its normal

make sure your manifold is setup for an external gate. If not your gonna have to spend a little extra to get it prepped for one. GL on the build. Cant wait to see the results.

it plays into the scavenge effect. it's not 100% closed off, id say maybe 5% if that.

I got the manifold from ebay.

I dont need a manifold with an external wastegate. This turbo has an internal wastegate.

No,im pretty sure its blocked off completely. If it wasnt sealed, youd have an exhaust leak.It seems like its some sort of expansion plug, and they put a couple of spot welds on it to keep it from popping out.

poke your finger on the inside of the exhaust housing near the compressor wheel.

there is a hole in there for the exhaust to flow out of the wastegate side.

i said the 5% due to the hole being closed off. like in your typical mhi set ups.

Oh ok,i thought you were talking about the plug with the weld spots on it.

the super 20 was a old school upgrade turbo for the 2.2-2.5 turbo dodge stuff

much like a super 60, so on and so forth.

dude, that gate is welded shut. the part you are refering to is that big gold looking actuator outside of the turbo. If your turbo was internally gated, then where does the exhaust dump from the gate go? especially if you have that little addaptor ring in there?

not trying to be fresh, we would just hate to see you hook that thing up and find out you have no wastegate at all.

What hes saying is there should be a hole inside the exhaust port other than the hole for the exhaust blades of the turbine, if there is a hole in there you're good, if not you got a problem. If not thats a RACE version turbo thats set up to be spun continously and RELILES solely on a BOV, risky but would work. My 85 Lebaron Turbo knew so. also saves form haing to fab up a funky exhaust "manifold" to make it work, just weld up a standard flange like pictured before and go, internaly wastegated and roll.

I understand what what you both are saying just trying to bridge the gap

So what else are you doing to the motor other than mounting it up?

Internals of any kind?

To bad you fail to see what I'm talking about. The internal gate design. Thats a place for exhaust gases to get trapped those causing back pressure after the turbo holding back power.
