Hardened oil pump gears

ok, this is one i have been wondering about as well.

the build book showes the bates oil pump gears being used, however, they arent a build item i have seen ANYONE do on this forum.

1. theory as to their necessity - expansion under high load, i would believe the ATI helps keep this in check

2. necessity as a whole?

high rpm usage and vibrations can be hard on the pump gears and a 2step is hard on the gears also those things can cause the oil pump gears to crack I would love to have a set

yes that's what I was saying. I just need to figure out the best treatment, but I'm assuming any heat treating company should know

Shot peening is just a surface treatment, I think some sort of deep case hardening or thru hardening would be better suited for an oil pump gear. I'll talk to some guys tomorrow about it though.

to do the oil pump you will need to send it to a company to put through an extreme heat process. I have a company out here that can do them.

shot peening literally just closes the pores up on the surface for the most part. Its also usually done AFTER heat treatment.

I think bates also uses a different material in the gears also

So case hardening looks like the only option at this point...

Alloyed Material would most likely be a certain percentage of Molybdenum.

Did Bates actually make high strength alloy steel gears? Or could it just be a thermal spray hardened surface?

I would assume that these hardened gears would be a different color than normal oil gears?

Only time it might be needed is in some of the 1000hp gm builds.

Hardening is a doable and will be perfectly fine. Bates might of used different material bit no one knows for sure.

If somrthing is hardened properly you should notice a color difference

I disagree, through hardening sometimes darkens lower carbon steels but anything .5% and over is impossible to tell. I spent a solid 2 months in a treating lab at school and couldn't learn the difference just by looking

If you pay attention to most welding procedures you will see the color hue from the intense heat and normal relative distortment. Other than being covered up by a coating, I would have a hard time NOT seeing the heat input of case hardening.

I saw skunks thread about this omiotek and was really blown away, but then he shared more of the car lol.

Well other then working at werks I work in my dad's machine shop part time at his spring business and we heat treat tooling alllllll the time....... S7 d2 and a bunch of others ans they all change colors. It depends on the temps and process. If you heat something thick under 1000 degrees it probablly won't do anything......

Just a natural phenomenon due to rapid oxidation.
