Header Wrapping Cold Air Intake. Worth It?

I have a ZZP cold air intake coming my way. I've seen a few guys header wrap the intake piping. Is it actually worth doing? Has anyone ever noticed cooler IAT's running it?

I could see it protecting the intake from the edges of where it feeds through the lil hole behind the headlight from physical damage, but I dont know if itll help your IATs or not.

I don't think this would do anything. There is no heat source and wouldn't provide any cooling. It primarily would be for show and protection for the intake.

No heat source? How about the whole motor?

I don't see it helping much at all. Maybe a couple degrees.

Well I have some header wrap sitting around. Maybe when my intake comes in I'll compare my IAT1 to IAT2 temps before and after wrapping it

I'm gonna do it on a really hot day. Go for a good drive, check my temps. Go home and wrap it and go right out again

There's a lot of "depends" on a CAI wrap. On the mostly-plastic ones, there's not that much heat conduction from the plastic, and I'd doubt you would get much benefit. On the aluminum, it conducts heat very well, and you can lower temps 2-3 degrees with insulation. Plus, if you have tubular headers and such, you have higher engine bay temps.

They also have insulating coatings that would probably look a hell of a lot better than a wrap.

I believe the ZZP intake is aluminum. And I know header wrap looks like crap lol. But if it drops temps that would actually be worth It I would run it. I'm sure an insulating coating wouldn't be cheap

What I was referring to when I said heat source was, there is no direct contact with a heat source like a header does with head of the engine and exhaust fumes. Yes I agree that the engine producing radiant heat would give the CAI some higher temps but I don't think its anything that would be worth the time or money on. Just my opinion in the matter.

i remember everyone was all over areas nuts when he posted a picture and his intake was wrapped. theres no gains at all from wrapping it other than keeping it from getting scratched up..

Will it reduce heat soak on the intake? Yes. Will it matter once it hits the the throttle body? No. Will it look cool? Maybe? Is it worth it? Meh...

SILVER REFLECTIVE FILM

This silver reflective film reflects up to 950 0F of radiant heat and has a continuous operating temperature of 450 0F. The film weighs about 8
ounces per square yard.
This film has a pressure sensitive adhesive that incorporates a fiberglass backing for strength and tear resistance. There is up to a 150 0F gradient temperature drop across the 3 -5 mil thick film during normal operating temperatures.
This film meets or exceeds the FAA 12-second vertical burn requirement.

Part Number: 1501-26

Standard width is 27 inches. Racer cost is $19.00 a linear foot.

Key Benefits:

Can easily be cut and configured to each chassis style
Easy to repair since it adheres to itself
Lightweight aerospace material
Easy to install and remove

yesit works. yes race cobalts wrap their intakes in it. yes iat1 are cooler. yes the engine bay is hot, in an LNF hugely hotter.

stock redline air box. inlet diameter stock RL for those with cobalts lol

smart money would wrap the ic pipes in this on an LNF

no time not enough gain to worry. did wrap the engine coolant bottle and the catch can was not wrapped. at least when we built and ran it.

This.

I was waiting for you to post this up. John, was it pretty easy to form to Time Attack's intake ducts? I may try this stuff on my stock intake, and see how it works out. By the way do you sell the reflective film by any chance?

Fyi, the stock SS/SC airbox inlet at the filter is 3" i.d. The piping is were it gets all crazy in size (goes all oblong and such). I wish I could fit a redline/trailblazer air box somewhere though

Personally I think header wrap and that reflective foil wouldn't look very good under the hood but it if was actually worth running I would do it.
