Nah, its easy, just jack the car up, it sits over the rear axle. I did mine at 30K, which is factory interval for just about every vehicle as far as fuel filters are concerned. You do need the line release tool to get one side off though, they can be picked up at any auto parts/tool store for a few bucks. The filter is kinda expensive though.

the one on my bimmer is a clamp, so no special tool at all.

Yeah, its something that ford and gm do, it is a little clamp type thing that slides over the line into the filter and releases it, like an inside snap clip kinda thing.

Ive never changed a fuel filter on over a dozen cars ive owned and with all of them over 65K they still ran fine and got as good a gas mileage as they did when new. Just depends if the stations you fill up at have a decent filtering setup or not.
Had a Ford Tempo with 105K on it and never changed that one either and when I sold it it still got 28 mpg and ran fine.

Maybe you just didn't notice it getting slower and slower over time.

It's all in personal preference. I'm at 25K and haven't changed mine yet, but plan to soon.

I should do mine soon since I just past 30,000 miles. I heard either 30K or 50k depending on where I asked. The owners manual doesnt say.
