How to tell if the top engine mount needs to be replaced?

For the LSJs is there any kind of service limit on when the top engine mount should be replaced? For example, on some cars I know that there should only be so much distance between the top metal part of the mount and the mount insert. I could not find anything related to this at all when it comes to the Ecotecs when I looking the the FSM. When looking at mine I could insert my index finder between the rubber insert and mount itself no problem, and the rubber almost looks as if it has slid back some from the metal bracket that attaches the block. I just happened to notice this while looking underneath the hood and never paid much attention to this at all before, so it seemed kind of odd? Should there be that much space between the mount and insert?

If anyone knows the service limit on these I'd be interested to hear

You can get a nice TTR mount for 150 now, id say just get that. Then you dont have to worry about it.

I have had poly mounts in my previous car, and no way in hell will I use them again. Thanks for the suggestion, but I am only going to use the stock top mount.

Anyone else know?

support the motor, remove the 3 bolts and see if the t bracket is loose in the mount. It should be pretty snug in there....if not replace it, I may have some good used ones around here cheap pm if you need one
