hydrolock

okay here is my question for all you experts.

I have a 2006 SS/SC. Recentley I did the airbox mod and put a autozone generic air filter on. (cone style) I love it. I do have that defect where there is a gap under the headlight on the Drivers side.

Here is my worry, Will my filter risk hydro lock driving through pouring rain and small puddles because of that gap, and even if the gap wasn't there, can the air box mod risk hydro lock?

Unless you drive into a lake or a puddle that gets upto the height of the filter, you should have nothing to worry about.

But to be safe avoid the big puddles.

change that POS filter for a decent one. and invest in a hydroshield.
its like a fine mesh condom for your air filter to protect it from water.

there is also a splash gaurd covering your intake area underneath. you shouldnt have any problem. I didnt cut my airbox off when i did my AIrbox mod. I just put a Generic filter on n didnt put the top back. i wouldnt worry too much though. Just avoid deep puddles

I may just go back to stock for now, until I get a real CAI.

they are $20.

If companies like K&N and Injen sell them and endorse them....im willing to believe they are effective

Talk to your local performance parts store. they shouldnt have a problem getting them.

and then pulled out the lock and painted it.

when I did mine, I used an AEM dryflow, which comes with a large hoseclamp to tighten the filter on.

On top of that, for piece of mind, I replaced the bottom of my airbox with mesh. to hold it safely, and still alow air in, and whine out

You are not going to hydrolock unless you fully submerge the air intake in water. You can install a water shield if you want. I have been running without one for two years with no problems and I know the filter element gets some rain water splashed on it even with wheel well shield in place.

I was going to say, are there any members that have gotten hydro-lock on the cobalt from an intake? If so post up, I want to hear how stupid you could actually be to get it (or unlucky).

To my knowledge of the SS/SC cobalt from work, It's not a headlight "defect" just the rod on the bottom of the headlight that slides into the tab to line it up correctly, is either bend or not in the hole. Just pull the headlight out and make sure that it lines up correctly and if you have to bend it a little bit. I had to do this on my buddy's red SS/SC.

*Hope that helps with the healight*

well, my bumper is defientley crooked, because on the driver side theres a gap, and on the passanger side, its pushed up too far and is slightly buldging over the light.

That is the exact same thing that happened to my buddy, just pull the headlight out and make sure it goes into the bottom tab. Another thing you might have to do is to tweak the bumper a bit to straighen out that right side. This problem is from the factory when they are being assembled, It was in a GM document. And it tells us to do exactly what I just told you to do to fix it. I haven't been unable to get it to look yet. If i can find the document # again i'll let everyone know the exact steps to fix it.

Hmmm I have the airbox mod and I drove down a watery road the other day and my car died. Hydrolock? I think yes. But if it was hydrolocked wouldn't it still turn over? Cause it just clicks when I try and start it. The water on the road wasn't very deep and I stayed toward the middle and at first it felt like it was losing power, then just stalled. Had to get car towed to my house and took out the plugs and checked oil, oil looked like it was really thin and dripped off the dipstick very easily. Can anyone help me? I'm thinking the first thing I should do is get a new starter. I pulled off the intake tube and water poured out right before the throttle body. Checked the connections to the battery, tried jump starting to maybe shoot some water out of the cylinders after taking the spark plugs out and still just a click.

nah bro. u fucked that **** up. the electronics may work off the battery. like the starter may click and the alternator may try to turn over but in no way will it fire up ha. that sucks.

and to the op. putting a cai on ur car or the airbox mod is more dangerous either way. but dont worry about it. just avoid puddles on the driver side of the car or in general if uve got the sc and ravoid the puddles on the right if u have a tc.
