It varies from person to person......let's just say poor taste in generally a requirement for being a ricer ;-)

POS car with shitty aftermarket mods. Or a nice car with shitty POS getto looking mods. Spray paint or 1/2 ass mods, ex (fart cans, high spoilers, spray painted rims) Anything that doesn't look like it belongs, in my definition that's what it is.

you know a car is rice when you see it, and you think to yourself, "what the **** were they thinking"

Wow high spoiler, SS/SC has it, spray painted rims, many people here are doing that, fart cans, a few have them on here. I think any of this in moderation can be alright, you just have to know when enough is enough!

for me i ask myself 3 main questions when i see a suspected rice burner

1. has the modifications that have been done to the car in question improved the cars ability to turn stop or accelerate or sustain speed better then when it was factory.

2. of the modifications that have been made what % of the time/money went to said "upgrades".

3. what modifications made to the vehicle HURT its ability to turn, stop, accelerate or sustain speed. (this is definately the worst offender but isnt necessarily rice, more on that later).

ill give a few examples of each and what (imo) is and is not rice.

in regards to question #1

mods such as: painting calipers, painting brake drums, polishing intake manifolds, changing the vacume tubs to a pastel (or whatever) color (assuming nothing was wrong with the oem lines) can be considered rice imo these do not improve the cars ability, HOWEVER they do not hinder in any mesurable way also said "mods" cost very little and require not much more then time. so generally these are ok. from a personal standpoint i can understand the kid who is broke and wants to do something to his car to make it look better hell i was there once so i can understand so i generally cut the kids some slack as long as it doesnt flow too much into #2 and 3.

question #2

here is where it starts to turn to rice, someone who spends 20 dollars on a can of paint to paint there calipers when there brakes are fading because they didnt spend 15$ to replace the pads that are wearing thin can be considered rice, someone who blows 30 bucks on vac lines for there car when they have a crappy air filter that costs all of 15 bucks to replace or deteriorating boost tubes that need replacing or a car that overheats cause of a bad thermostat that costs all of 15 bucks can be considered rice, someone who spends 6 hours polishing there wheels and has missing or mismatched lugnuts holding said wheels on can be considered rice....not all of these generally makes a care a rice burner but the more things you find that conform to these examples make a car rice.

question #3

Huge wings that cost $$ in both cost of the wing and in instalation, these can cause unnecessary and dangerous front end lift at high speed(fwd+front end lift=bad) as well as causing horrible drag both of which are not condusive to performance. ginormous (combo of gigantic and enormous) mufflers/exhaust systems that use crappy tubing, non mandral bent, worse then stock metal **** thats gona rot out in 2 years or less when the stock one flowed better and would last 10 years or more. , big turbos and no tuning to go with it is also rice this can cause the damn car to blow up in a worse case scenario which is just stupid , Or a roll cage made out of EXHAUST TUBING....i actually saw this once i was like OMFG you turned your car into a death trap the dude was like "naw it ownz" (true story)

Its all about balance folks, if people want there cars to look good and go fast just do it responsibly, if you spend money on your car to make it look good at least make some kind of effort to make it better. i dont want to be driving my motorcycle down the road and have some shitty wing off a neon hit me in the helmet(also true story)
