installed wideband, questions on afr's

i just installed my innovate wideband yesterday and im a little nervous now. keep in mind that this setup hasnt changed much (i did the exhaust and header) since i bought the car from the previous owner, its been in the same configuration for a year and a half now. here is the setup

-2.9
-42lb injectors
-stage 2 tune with p0420 deleted
-heat exchanger
-cai/airbox mod
-clear image stainless header
-custom 2 1/2" exhaust with magnaflow resonator and muffler, no cat.

i notice when i step on it lighly and go 5 psi or so itll be around 13.9 afr, however this is at light throttle, doesnt concern me much. when i get hard into it it seems lean, at around 4000rpm its around 13.2, and the richest it gets is around 12.3. now i havent had a real good chance to get a pull right through 1st and 2nd gear since installing the wideband, but after looking at the afr i dont really know if i want to now. nothing has changed in the car, i get a couple degrees knock retard after driving hard for a bit (to be expected) and the odd missfire, wich i know can cause a false lean reading.

i have a meth kit im going to be putting on this weekend, i was planning on running only around 20% meth as i was doing it mostly for cooling, however with the lean-ish afr im thinking ill start at 50/50 and mabey run a little higher depending on what happens with the afr's. i know adding meth is a bit of a band-aid, but im not equiped to tune at this time.

i do eventualy plan on having it tuned, i know a guy that plays with a lot of gm stuff but so far hasnt done an lsj. at that time i will also go with 60lb injectors and likley drop to a 2.7" pulley and have it tuned for meth.

actually, your 2.9" pulley is leaning you out since the injectors are already pretty much maxxed with the stage 2 stuff.
however, 12.3 isnt TOO horrible, and is actually a good starting point for meth. a 50/50 mix will probly put you at around 11.5 and lighten the load on those 42#s

the injectors arent maxing out at mid range rpm were im seeing the leaner low 13 afr. at that point im seeing 15ms pulsewidth wich at 4500rpm is 63% duty cycle. i know plenty of people run the stage 2 tune with down as low as 2.8" pulleys without issues.

ive tuned a few cars but never obdII stuff. my last car (86z24 2.8l v6) i had a megasquirt stand alone in, and my friends turbo 2.2l ecotec swap (its in a 90 sunbird) also has a megasquirt on it. the car hauled ass at only 6psi, however if it would get a touch lean, as soon as it hit 12.5 afr it broke a piston. it did that 4 times before i got my chance to put some wisecos into it. thats really my only venture into tuning with boost so im on edge when i see afr in the low 13s in boost.

do a 3rd gear pull, let out if it gets in the high 12's. Come back and let us know what it looked like throughout the whole band from 3K up.

thats going to be rather tough for me to do. about the only place i would try that is the freeway and there is so much construction and cops im pretty much gaurenteed to get an exessive ticket and lose my licence. about the best i can probly do is up to about 140km/h, wich is far from 7000rpm.

ive tuned cars that run 2.8's on 42's with the idc's being low 80%...that whole ur maxing them out is garbage..u need to get tuned..if u add a 60/40 mix of meth u'll drop the afr almost a full point so if ur running high 12s u'll be perfect

well, kind of difficult to tune in 1st or 2nd. Can't help you if you don't do what's needed.

You shouldnt be that lean no matter what anyone says go calibrate your wideband i bet thats the problem. not maxing out injectors.

whats wrong with low 13s in the middle of the rpm range? i'm tuned to 13.0 at 3000-3500 rpm and ramp down from there.

not all cars will max out the 42# injectors with 2.9 and 2.8 pulleys. but many do, mine included.

OP, tell me what your pulsewidth is from 6000 to 7000 rpm. that will tell you if the injectors are static. screw IDC%

Sounds like a typical stage 2 + 2.9. The wideband is fine. I suggest a tune if your able.

first off, i did recalibrate the wideband and its fine, reads the same. im not actualy tuning at this point, i dont have hpt, althoug i have located a guy that tunes and im thinking in spring ill go with 60lb injectors and a 2.7 and have it tuned then.

i did get a bit of a pull today merging on the freeway. 3rd gear got it to around 5000rpm. 3000-4500rpm the afr was all over the map between 12.8 and 13.6. as soon as it hit 4500rpm it jumped down to 11.5:1 and held that. i guess thats about normal.

ive tune a couple speed density based turbo cars and they act a lot different. maf tuning is a bit different to me, i proby over reacted to what seemed lean to me. as i said before, this car has been running with the same configuration for well over a year.
