Intercooling an SS.

What would happen if instead of Adding a K&N intake, i would Put an intercooler instead. Now my questions is where would the other end of the intercooler connect to. And is this even possible.

yeah air to air like on the srt4 and EVO. No air to water. like front mount air to air intercooler.

Nevermind. I have to point here. LOL. I just love the way the front mount air to air would look on the little hole we got on our SS.

I have a picture of a cobalt with a front mount.. But i cant upload it.

you mean like putting a short ram intake in, and then intercooling it. If so its possible on most cars, but idk about ours.

well i know its possible for a supercharger to have a front mount intercooler. I guess we will have to wait to see if companies make them . But i see what your saying..if it would be more efficient or if we would gain any power from a fmic???

i wish someone with alot of knowledge would shed some on this too.

No.with the cars current supercharger & intercooler setup you can not add an air-air intercooler that would be effective.

The Laminova air-water intercooler that our cars use already is integrated into the intake manifold. In order to replace this with an air/air you would need to relocate the supercharger, and fabricate a new intake manifold. If the engine used a centrifugal style supercharger as seen on a lot of F-bodys, Mustangs and Corvettes as aftermarket than yes a front mount IC as seen on 2k2CamaroSS's F body would work.but significant mods would be needed to facilitate this swap....youd bee better of starting with a base Cobalt and turbocharging it or adding a centriugal SC to it if you need to have that front IC.

As is tands right now the most effective mod (IC-wise) is to upgrade to the dual pass Laminova as used on the GAC cars........I believe this piece is available through Powell Motorsports.

Thats not possible with a roots type blower since the blower directly feeds the intake . The factory blower has a inlet , but nowhere for the air to go other than the intake . While centrifigul sc's and turbos are remotely mounted and have both an inlet and a outlet .

Air To Water Is Better

Air to water coolers are more efficent than air to air. Look, air is actually an insulator,it will hold more heat than water. Water can absorb and dissapate heat alot quicker. If you were hot,you could cool down faster by jumping into a pool with a temp. at 80 degrees, than to sit in a room that was 80 degrees. You see alot of air to air coolers because they are cheeper to design, adaptable to a larger variety of applications and contain less components. Well I'm content with mine, exept that why did they install the coolers radiator behind the a/c condensor? With the a/c on it is working against the benefits of the cooler.

The smallest heat exchanger (radiator, condenser, etc...) always goes in front.

you could put an air to air before the supercharger so the supercharger would suck air through the air to air first but i dont think it would help at all.
Plus most people dont race with the a/c on. When your cruising down the road at a stedy speed the incoming air is bypast past the supercharger.

Yeah, got to thinking about it today. The intercooler would disapate more heat on a constant basis as compared to the condensor for the a/c. There-fore may not allow the a/c to work as efficient.
